Update: the new vet did an ultrasound on Icy and said her abdominal swelling is NOT free fluid. They said it’s contained in a structure, but that they don’t think it’s an organ

Their guesses were tumor or cyst (or multiple)

Also they said they saw pieces of something floating in it which could be blood or just some other material

They said if baytril did nothing for a month, it’s probably not an infection, and they’d have to do a painful test to see what it really is, so they recommended I leave her alone because she’s still living her normal life and acting normal

I'm sorry to hear that. I think this is what happens with older hamsters. They can get fluid filled tumours or cysts when they have swelling and it's just a case of keeping them comfortable. I hope she can still have Metacam and see how she goes.

Sorry to hear the vet has confirmed Icy’s swelling. Hope the baytril keeps her comfortable and able to lead as normal a life as poss.

Im worried now that the vet visit might have really scared icy, because ever since then, if she hears a loud noise at home, she freezes completely still like a statue for a few seconds to minutes, and doesn’t respond to me touching her or talking or giving food

I read this is a normal hamster response to fear but I’ve never seen her do it before and I don’t know how to calm her down because it’s been 2 days since the vet

Update: family member of mine has accidentally dropped her from a foot off the ground and she landed on her stomach/feet, and I’m not sure if that’s enough to hurt her because she’s already been acting afraid so I can’t tell. I checked her and she has no external injuries

She normally jumps about 6-8 inches on her own occasionally and is always ok, but she seemed a little alarmed from the surprise. She’s gone back to bed since then after taking some banana from me, and I don’t want to wake her

Update 2: several hours later, she got up from her nap for a minute and seemed to be walking ok and ate some carrots

Sorry to hear your having a bit of a time of it. Try not to fret, if she’s walking around ok the fall has most likely not hurt her and I would guess the vet trip would be a bit scarey, hopefully she will settle back into her normal routine within a week or so. Just keep doing all the things you’d normally do around her.
