Default My hamster isn't eating almost anything

Hello,
My hamster hasn't touched his food bowl for at least 3 days now (it's usually empty by the morning) and he isn't interested in any treats or anything. Even the in the things he used to love.
He only eats salad and only when I give it to him from my hand and only that. He doesn't even touch his other favourite treats anymore and I am not sure if he's sleepy or what's wrong, but I've seen him walking around his eyes closed or half closed.
I wanted him to come to my hand and let him run around freely, but he just went back to sleep. Usually in the evenings we've always been outside from the cage.

Is it a sign that something is wrong? Is he getting old or starting to die? What's wrong?
A week ago everything was alright. I don't know how old he is or if it's just temporary and I'm overreacting but is he starting to die?

I can understand your concerns. Is it possible to look at his teeth? I was wondering if his teeth are overgrown and this is preventing him from eating on his own.

It sounds like he is ill. Are you able to take him to a vet?

In the meantime, you could experiment with different foods including soft foods to see if there is anything he will eat.

How would I do that?
He looks weird in general. His eyes look just weird… They're either half closed or weirdly glowing. I've never seen him like this. His eyes don't look normal.
I'd like to see what he's like outside, but he's not coming out.

What do I do now? If he is ill is it a death sentence for a dwarf? How could he become ill? Maybe it was because it's too cold and there's absolutely nothing I can do? I've given him more paper and more bedding and covered the cage with a blanket, but I don't think it's helping. The heating isn't on yet and it's out of my control. I hope he's fine though.

I'll ask my friend if she'd come to the vet with me.

Okay in that case I agree with Sushi and I think your hamster needs to see a vet.

Please do not think it is you who has done anything wrong. Hamsters can get ill. Bogie is an older hamster isnt he? I am glad you are going to ask your friend if they can go to the vet with you. I really hope it goes well.

I was going to ask how old he is but you say you don't know. How long have you had him. He definitely seems unwell. Is he drinking? You need to take him to a vet. It could be something as simple as an infection, which they can treat with antibiotics, or he could be dying. It's hard to know. But you've had good advice above. Tempt him with tasty little bits like baby food and see if that helps. Try giving him water from a teaspoon so he gets something to drink.

Keep him comfortable. What country are you in? It's not that cold in the Uk yet. If it's cold where you are you can get heating pads to put under the cage.

I've had him for a year and a month. I have no idea how old he is.
My friend will help me book the time and she said she'll come to me to the vet, since I don't speak the language. I don't know what I'm going to do if he dies.

I was very sure he'll die the next year or in 2024.I'm guessing his ill, yeah and I hope I won't make it worse by going to the vet since the weather is cold outside already.

He doesn't even want to play with me and he has almost always come onto my hand and is excited to go outside and run around on the bed, but now he ignores my hand and goes to sleep.

Poor thing. Do keep him comfortable. I wouldn't clean his cage out just now and disturb him. If he's peeing in his nest you could carefully spot clean the nest and add a bit more nesting material but try not to disturb him too much. Try offering him water on a spoon and see if he tries to lick it up.

Try and prepare for taking him to the vet comfortably. Do you have a pet carrier? I usually have the pet carrier on my knee with a blanket it over it - partly helps keep them warm and cosy and also protects them from the stress of noise, flashing lights and light generally.

Plenty of bedding and nesting material in the pet carrier and a bit of cucumber in there.

If you think he is dying then you might want to wait and see how he is tomorrow.
