Default Re: My hamster isn't eating almost anything

Thank you all for your support.
Usually at this time me and Bogie would play. He'd be on the playground and I'd teach him how to use his slide and different toys, because he always followed my hand.
The last few days have not been like this and it all happened to suddenly. At first I thought he was tired and then I noticed in the morning that his food bowl is full. It's never full, the water bowls has never been clean by the morning. Usually the first thing I had to do is to give him fresh water, because the water bowl is full of bedding. These were the major signs. He didn't even come out and when I saw him moving his eyes were closed. I was kind of thinking maybe there's something in his eyes and read from Google on how to clean their eyes, but then I thought to myself that the vet could do this, because I don't want to hurt my hamster. You know, the vet is a professional.

I've read before how hamsters die and people have often written: "He was active in the evening and in morning he was suddenly dead". I always thought that me and Bogie would play in the evening again and suddenly by the morning he'd be dead and I was hoping he'd die quickly and wouldn't feel any pain.

Tomorrow I'll have to give him some medicine and painkillers. I have no idea how I'll give it to him, but I have to do it. The vet said he's in pain. Right now he's sleeping. He has often been asleep and I hope that eases the pain.

I can clearly see that something is wrong. He usually always wants to come out of his carrier, but this time he just wanted to sleep. I had to take him out and now he's in his nest.

I hope he'll realise tomorrow that he has to take the pill and other medicine, because the faster he eats in the better.

Everything will go well. Everything has to go well and I can see that Bogie is a fighter. I hope I'll be able to tell you that he made it. If he has to have a surgery then there's a possibility that he won't make it. I hope the antibiotics help him.

Thank you all for your support. It means a lot to me.

How lovely you and Bogie usually spend time together every night. That is so precious. Often hamsters prefer to do their own thing so your bond is very special.

This does not mean the end for Bogie. He could make a huge improvement with the antibiotics. I am hoping for this so much. I have noticed with small animals that when they get unwell it is very sudden.

I wish you luck with giving Boogie the medication. I have heard some people offer a syringe with something like Ribena after so the hamster has something nice to drink to take the taste of the medicine away.

We are all wishing Bogie well and thinking of you both.

Thank God this forum exists with understanding people.
Truth be told, my hamster isn't opening his mouth, thus I cannot give him antibiotics and now I'm going to the vet and see how it's done.
I've been trying for four hours already.

When I googled how to get hamster's mouth open I got bunch of responses like: "Well, that doesn't seem to be fair forcing hamster to open their mouth" and bunch of animal activists that would rather see an animal die than to open his mouth. I don't know what I'm going to do. I'll go to the vet and ask them to help me. He's not even opening his mouth for food, not even his favourite food and I have no idea how to forcefully open his mouth.

I am so sorry. Will the vet see you today? I would not have a clue how to give my hamster medication.

No, my vet won't see him today, but I told them my situation and that I struggle to give him the pill and they gave my hamster a pill and tomorrow I'll go back.
I hope antibiotics will help.

I wonder if any other hamsters are given pills. I do not see how it is possible to give that. Are you meant to crush it and mix it with water?

Yes, I'm supposed to cut 1/20 from the pill and then crush it and give it to him and the other pill I'm supposed to break and give with water and another one is fluid, which is given by syringe.

It must be so hard to know the right amount to cut. At least that will be syringed too.
