I don't think that's a good idea taking him on a long journey. And no I wouldn't force him to come out. If he's avoiding coming onto your hand, he might be in pain and avoiding things. Would he walk into a tube? Eg with a bit of smelly food at the far end to tempt him into? Then lift him out in the tube and onto your knee on a blanket (while you're on the sofa or something) and just stroke him on your knee and see how he is. I sometimes used to find they perk up when out of the cage and want to start exploring the sofa or eat something from your hand. It might give you an idea of if he is standing and walking ok.

Alternatively - just leave him as he is - if he's still doing some normal routine things like using his sand bath and peeing, then he can get up.

The main thing is he gets water as he won't survive without that. But if a hamster is dying they sometimes get to the point where they don't want food and water.

One of our syrians when dying, only left his nest to use his toilet - and did that right to the end, even though he no longer wanted food - but would take liquid from a teaspoon while in his nest.

First thing to do is move his food bowl and water as close as you can to his house and nest so he can get at them easily.

I tried with food and he finally came onto my hand. I put him on bed and also put some food, but he didn't eat, but at least he was running around. The same with the playground. He couldn't wait to get out.
I gave him new food into his food bowl and he went to check it out and was digging in the food to see what's in there but he didn't eat anything. I gave him salad again and he's eating that.
He has been eating that for about five minutes now, but I can see him eating that. I gave him a big piece. He has lost some weight though. He has lost 5grams compared to few weeks ago. He now weighs 68grams.

The good news is he was running around on the playground looking for a way to get out.
That's usual for his behaviour and his eyes were wide open. I am not sure if I'm overreacting and everything's fine or he's ill or there might be something with his teeth.
He has chew toys, pinecones and branches to chew on though. The thing is I don't know how to check his mouth. I don't even know how to open his mouth and truth be told I am scared of hurting him I don't think me checking his teeth would be such a good idea and now that he spends all of the time in his nest I don't think I'll see him yawning either.

Now it's certain, he can definitely run around, so I don't think he's actually dying?
Did you take your Syrians to a different place when they were dying? He can get up and move.

I'll keep you updated.

I just changed the sand as well, so it's smooth and I can see if he has been there.

If he ever dies I hope it'll be very quick and painless. I hope he's fine.

No when my Syrian was dying, he would perk up a bit when out of the cage - ie look less ropey and be slightly more interactive. But he wasn't able to run around.

That's good news anyway. When the colder weather comes, they can hide away a lot more and sleep longer - like they're preparing for colder weather. And the darker nights affect them too I think.

Are you sure he's not just eating from his hoard? He could have just changed his hoarding habits. When they empty the food bowl, they don't eat much of it - they hoard most of it. And tend to eat from their hoards. Although the 5g weight loss doesn't sound good. But they can start to get leaner as they get older.

I have a "nightcam" so I can review what my hamsters have been doing at night while I'm asleep. If you could see his night time activities you might find he's perfectly active, and drinking, and grooming etc.

Just keep an eye on him. I'd suggest getting him out like this every night - even waking him a bit earlier to get him out (then you might see him stretch and yawn and see his teeth).

It's been a night and he hasn't eaten or drank anything at all. He hasn't been to his sand bath. He used to love sand baths, but it only means that he pees and poops in his nest. He hasn't eaten anything either. I woke him up and gave him salad. He doesn't even eat worms anymore, which is a huge red flag for me.

I am still hoping everything is fine.

I don't think he's grooming himself, since his coat is a bit of a mess. All he does is sleep and eat salad in his cage.

I'll wake him up earlier today to see if he's yawning. I don't have a nightcam, but maybe I can record him somehow with my iPad to see how he's doing.

That's a relief that he was running around yesterday, but he immediately came back onto my hand as soon as he could. He usually doesn't want to come back immediately. At least then his eyes were wide open.

How did your hamster's eyes look like when he was dying? Were they half closed as well?

Hello,
thank you very much. It means a lot to me. The situation is the same as the past few days. He doesn't even eat mealworms anymore, which he used to love. He only eats salad. I woke him up and gave him some salad and he ate from his nest and he went back to sleep.
I don't know how he's feeling or have no idea what's wrong. The only vet that knows about the hamsters in my city has all the dates booked and the first available date would be in two weeks. Me and my friend are trying to see if there's anybody that would cancel their booking.

I am so sorry Bogie is still unwell and the vets are all fully booked. I hope there is a cancelation and you can get Bogie seen.

At least he's eating salad and I always wash the salad before and there's water on it. At least it helps to keep him hydrated. I'll go to the store as soon as I can and buy some cucumber as well and we'll see if he eats that. I hope he's not dying. Maybe he'll be fine. We've all had days when we've been sick and suddenly we're feeling fine.
Sleeping is probably good, because it helps the body to fight the disease. I don't know if he's cold because Google said they'd drink a lot when they got cold.

Maybe he's just getting old? I'll try to record him tonight when I'll go to sleep.

I don't know where Google gets the idea from that hamsters drink a lot when they're cold. They do talk some rubbish.

Just make sure your hamster has a lot of bedding in his house and leave a big heap of torn into strips plain white toilet paper near his nest.

How long have you had your hamster now?

I'll give him some more bedding as soon as I can. I just Googled and this came up.
Feeding Sick & Elderly Hamsters - YouTube -> My hamster has the same eyes (kinda closed). I am going to have to try this. I'll boil his food and will give it to him. Maybe then he will eat.
He already has lots of toilet paper near his nest, which he hasn't even touched.
I've had him for a year and one month and I don't know how old he is.
