Default Re: My hamster isn't eating almost anything

Bogie was running around a little again.
I'll have vet's appointment in a few hours and I'll ask what they think. His situation keeps changing and changes are very sudden. It's probably normal for hamsters. He was actually running around and pretty fast. He was as if nothing is wrong with him. Then I offered him salad and he tried to eat it but didn't manage to.

I'll ask today on what to do. I'm really confused. Is it normal for hamsters? I'm surprised he still has energy to run and hasn't lost any weight. He might eat something. I don't know.

Thank you all for being so understanding though. I think we've all gone through this and it's the first time for me.

Is there an update on Bogie? I have been thinking of you both. I hope you are okay.

Not really. He's still alive. I'll meet the vet tomorrow. In the last two days he has been a regular hamster and running around and sleeping, but I have to feed him. He doesn't eat on his own (yet).
For whatever reason when the vets have been feeding him he has been very calm, but with me he's not and he keeps moving, but with the vets he's calm and seems to eat well.
A friend of mine said that the vets are probably more confident and Bogie can feel that.
But he has been active and has been running around and climbing out of his carrier and coming onto my hand by himself. A couple days ago he didn't. The vet said she has seen miracles and she said there's hope, so she did not recommend euthanasia.

The good news is that I've stopped crying and I've accepted that he might die soon.
We'll see tomorrow what the vet says.

I think you have to be firm when feeding and it is not easy to do. Whenever I had to syringe my guinea pigs they would wriggle and only my partner could do it. The vets are experts so they will be able to feed Bogie well.

I can understand you are accepting you may loos Bogie. I hope your vet appointment goes well tomorrow.

Bogie will have a surgery on 5th of October. The vet asked me if I want to take care of Bogie for the rest of it's life and wait till he dies or I'll pick the surgery, because there are no other options left.

I tried feeding Bogie and the food ended up being everywhere and in his fur. I'm pretty sure it pissed him off as well. So I picked surgery and there's a chance he won't make it.

Bogie was my first pet in such situation. I mean the cat that I had (that doesn't live with me anymore, because I had to move abroad) is still fine and healthy and I gave him away back in 2018. Bogie is the first pet I've ever had that has had such drastic health issues and it was hard for me to accept it and I didn't know what to do.

What makes me feel better is that if he dies during the surgery he'll die in peace and I can live in peace knowing that I tried absolutely everything I could in order to save him.

Guinea pigs are also difficult to feed? I thought I had difficulties because he's literally a dwarf hamster.

I really hope the surgery goes well. After Bogie has surgery, is it possible for the vet to care got him until he recovers? I imagine that would be very expensive though so perhaps not an option.

I totally understand how difficult it has been for you. I would be just the same. It is so upsetting to see our little ones poorly. I think you have done a wonderful job of caring for Bogie. You made sure you took him to the vet, even doing this several times. You have tried your best to buy food he can eat such as baby food. You are trying your best to give him medication. You have been doing this alone which means you have had to be so strong. I actually think you should feel proud of yourself.

Oh yes! Guinea pigs can be a nightmare to syringe medication. They wriggle, bite, refuse to open their mouths. Some are okay but others are not and even more so if the medication tastes horrible to them.

Sorry to hear Bogie is not feeling any better. The decision must be so difficult to make but hopefully he will get through the surgery and start to recover. I think the current situation you have found yourself in is most upsetting, but you’ve tried your very best for Bogie, taking extra special care of him. Feeling upset and crying is very natural as you love him so much. Will be thinking of you both. Take care

It's good to hear that Bogie is holding his own and I hope the surgery goes well. Can you ask the vet if they would have a good look in his mouth while he is asleep? Just in case there is a problem there that's preventing him eating.

Today is Bogie's surgery.
Yes, they'll look into his mouth as well and fix his teeth. The bad thing is that Bogie is feeling very weak today, but in the morning we ate and drank a little together.
I'm hoping for the best and have prepared for the worst.

I am wishing Bogie all the best with the surgery. I understand what a horrible and anxious time it is waiting to hear back from the vets. We are all thinking of you both and with you in spirit.
