Default Swollen eye on Syrian :(

Hi guys,
My 2.5 year old Syrian Bertie is still a happy chappy, walking around, eating, up for cuddles and seems ok. I noticed today his right eye was quite dry, and seemed raised/swollen. He is loosing his hair and obviously getting old bless him.. I’ve been dreading these days! I just don’t know if he is in any pain. I want to avoid the vets if he is ok and no reason to worry just yet, as i know considering his age what they will suggest Has anyone experienced this before or does anyone have advice? I’m not massively worried yet, but again I have no idea if he is in pain.. Any help would be appreciated

Just because he's old doesn't mean that the vet would suggest to put him down.
The vet can also prescribe very effective pain relief. An eye problem can be painful and should get checked by a hamster knowledgeable or exotics vet, in my opinion.

Agree - eye problems can be really quite painful and it needs a vet visit - but do see an exotic vet who knows about eye problems. I had eye issues with our previous syrian and he was too old for surgery, so it was a case of keeping him comfortable on metacam as long as possible. I don't think a vet would suggest having him pts unless they decided it was a tumour pushing the eye out possibly. And even then they may say - see how he goes on metacam for a while. Does he seem fine in himself? They can also prescribe eye drops so the dry eye doesn't cause too much discomfort,

From what I've learned with eye issues, your hamster is likely to already be blind in that eye. Once it goes dry it's probably a "dead eye". It doesn't matter - they can't see that well anyway and he can manage fine with one

I found our hamster started running the other way round in his wheel (ie with his good eye pointing outwards).

It could be anything from an abscess to a tumour and probably the first thing they will try is antibiotics - to see if it goes down again. As well as metacam for pain relief and possibly eye drops.

The other thing - just to prepare you for the possibility. The dead eye could fall out under certain circumstances - not as bad as it sounds!

Thank you so much! Yeah he seems fine, just as normal. I just noticed his right eye was raised slightly, so as you’ve suggested I will take him to the vets! Thanks so much for the advice. Hopefully the vets will be able to give him something.

That’s interesting to know about the “dry eye” .. I never knew that! Not sure how I’m going to feel if it falls out lol. But thanks for the warning!
