Also just to reassure you - because there is leeway I don’t think 0.06 would cause kidney problems! It’s when people misread the syringe or instructions it can be life threatening- eg giving 0.3 ml instead of 0.03 mls. Your exotic vet may already have established that 0.03 twice a day would be ok. But personally I would keep to 0.03 per day if he seems fine and until you can speak to your vet.

Thank you both for reassuring me that I am doing the right thing for my little man (apart from medicating twice daily - which I am going to stop for now!).
I just adore him so much, he has been my little ray of sunshine through some very difficult times. I just wish with all my heart we could have them for longer. And I'm so sorry Ria P to hear you are going through something similar with Rodney, it never gets any easier does it.
Loki has never really been a big drinker, that's why I give him cucumber daily which he enjoys (I have also bought a watermelon!) He has always had a water bowl because that's what he was used to for the first 8 months before I adopted him and I haven't noticed it going down anymore than usual.
I have to be honest and say I also give him some extra treats, nothing too sugary but I hadn't heard of giving cake before! But more than anything he loves his cabbage and cauliflower leaves!
Thank you both again for your help and advice today, it really means a lot. X

Just a tip about cabbage! It's on the safe list of veg but best not to give too much too often as that can affect the urinary system as well. Not sure about cauliflower leaves. Lettuce can be an issue too as very watery. I tend to stick to broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, carrot and cucumber. And occasionally a pea or two!

"One of the main concerns about cabbage for hamsters is that it contains high levels of calcium, which they cannot process. In addition to that, it can cause kidney stones."

Only if they have it too much really but I prefer to give other veg.

Oh I didn't know that about cabbage, thank you for bringing this to my attention. He used to love broccoli and cauliflower florets but seemed to go off them a little but when I tried him with the leaves he went mad for them!

I am super happy to say that last night and this morning his pee was completely normal!!! I didn't give him the extra Metacam last night and I haven't started him on the ab's. When it was so hot I started putting a cold mug in his cage to cool off in but instead he started using it as a toilet! It's ideal because I can easily monitor the colour and consistency of his urine!

I forgot to add that for the past week or so his right eye is closed shut pretty much every time he gets up. I started bathing it with a little salt water and although it would open up, the next time he was up and about it would be closed again. It doesn't really look red or swollen, so I am just continuing to lightly wipe it with cotton wool or cotton buds and warm water. I have heard this can be age related, but is there anything else I can do to keep it open for longer?

This does happen a lot with older hamsters. Sometimes it frees itsekf but it’s not nice for them to have a stuck closed eye for more than a day so it’s doing them a favour loosening it and freeing it up. Our hamsters didn’t like me doing it but you could see visible relief afterwards once the eye was unstuck. With sale water you just need a teaspoon per pint of water. I do it in boiling water then let it cool down to tepid (or just add some cold to cool it down quicker). Eg half a pint boiling, half a pint cold. Unless you want it to be sterile and then all boiling and let it cool down. I don’t think it needs to be sterile though really.

Good news about the urine! Do you think it could possibly be some good he’s peed on? I and others have had that before - the thick brown liquid turned out to be a bit of peed on food that had gone mushy (in my case I thought it was green diarrhoea!)

I did wonder that, but I just can't think of anything he has in his cage that is dark brown. I am just so happy that it is back to normal, every time I see perfect coloured urine it puts such a huge smile on my face!!

Luckily he doesn't mind me bathing his eye too much, I just wondered if he should be having any eye drops to stop it from sticking up?! I bathed it this morning and by lunchtime it was half closed again, I just worry it must be annoying or a little uncomfortable for him.

I think it's just an old age thing and he wouldn't like eye drops either. Bathing it is fine.

Hi Ria P,
I have just had to start Loki on Baytril and obviously he hated the taste!! I remembered you saying about disguising the taste with Ribena and when I was out shopping I wasn't sure whether it was the one with no added sugar or not so I bought both!! They both contain citric acid but it is higher up in the ingredients in the no added sugar one, but obviously sugar is higher up in the other one! I'm guessing a lot less sugar is better for a dwarf but I just wanted to double check which one you use and how much?
Thank you!
