I have ordered some hemp seeds too.

I’m a bit worried about how she will cope with the hot weather that’s coming out way. She gets very uncomfortable in the heat. Does anyone have any tips for keeping a hamster cool?

You could put any ceramic hides in the fridge and leave them out once cold. There are also cooling marble tiles. I bought one from rodipet.

I hope she enjoys the hemp seeds.

Do you have anything ceramic in the cage? I had a ceramic salt pig type hide and our hamster used to go and sit in that when it was warm weather - rather than in his nest. Also used a terracotta plate under the water bottle and they'd go and sit on that. If you don't have anything ceramic you can just use a mug. I used to use two and rotate them in the fridge as Cloudy says. So put one in the cage that's been in the fridge, then put a second one in the fridge and swap the mugs over before you go to bed. So there's always one in the fridge.

Some people put a bag of frozen peas on top of the cage as well. During the day just open windows a bit so it cools things a bit (not too draughty obviously) or a fan even - but not right next to the cage.

I don’t have anything ceramic in the cage but I’ll give mugs a go.
She likes the hemp seeds.
So far her behaviour hasn’t changed and her weight is stable so I’m hoping those are good signs that she’ll be ok.
Thanks, as ever, for the tips.

Unfortunately, Cookie lost a few more grams after my last post but I weighed her tonight and it hasn’t changed from the weekend. She has eaten some softened pellets but I noticed some food I scattered in her cage had been left and not moved into storage, which is unlike her. I can’t see anything wrong with her teeth but I’m wondering if there could be a problem with her jaw. She seems happy to nibble small pieces of fruit and vegetables.

I was going to buy some baby food but couldn’t find anything suitable. A lot of the plain fruit/veg ones had a dash of lemon - I wasn’t sure if that would be ok as hamsters don’t eat citrus fruits. Can anyone recommend a particular baby food?

I'm sorry to hear that Cookie lost more weight.

I bought Ella's baby food when my first Syrian took ill and lost weight. Porridge made from plain oats and water is nourishing and well liked by most hamsters and so is a bit of scrambled egg.

My two staples for baby food are Hipp Sweet squash & chicken 6+ months (Sainsburys have it). And Cow and Gate Chicken sunday lunch 4+ months (Tesco sells this). All ingredients are safe in these two. Also Cow and Gate Pumpkin and Chicken. V similar to the Hipp one - Asda sells that. The ones with pumpkin and sweet squash are the most popular with hamsters I've found. Annoyingly none of the supermarkets sell all three! I bought some on Amazon once - 6 jar pack.

I think all the fruit ones contain lemon juice and most of the Ella's kitchen ones have lemon juice.

I do get the Ella's kitchen strawberry and raspberry porridge! It's marginally easier to make up than normal porridge and hamsters go potty for it. That's more of a treat though and doesn't have the nutritional value of the baby foods. Although most of the nutritional value will come from the soaked science selective.

Buy Organic Strawberry Porridge | Ella's Kitchen

There's some waste with the jars. The hipp one says use within 24 hours of opening and they need keeping in the fridge. So basically you can use it for two nights. And the rest gets binned. Some people used to freeze some in ice cube trays to save on waste, but some of them say not suitable for freezing.

Other people say the dash of lemon juice doesn't really matter. I tend to stick to the ones without it!

It's wasteful and costs money - but then often the hamsters are not having it for very long as it's in their old age.

Thank you so much for the tips. I did try a bit of porridge in water yesterday and she ate most of that.

She still seems alert and sociable with bright eyes and ears up so I think it might be old age catching up with her. She could easily be 2 years old by now. I will keep weighing her and I’m hoping that introducing more soft foods might enable her to gain a few grams.
