Default Rescue hamster possible deformity?

hi all!! i recently took in a hamster from a parent's friend after years of not having one, but i was not informed that he has a possible deformity. his lower back/butt region is very oddly shaped, and im unsure if its been like this his whole life or if this is possibly from an injury. he walks and moves and all that just fine, and doesnt seem to be in any pain at all, but i am a little concerned it could be effecting his health. i figured i would post on here and see if anyone has any idea what could be up, since my nearest vet that would treat hamsters is a 2 hour drive. obviously if it seems like he needs vet treatment i will take him, but since he doesnt seem to be in pain or really effected by it at all, i figured here was an okay bet. attached is the best picture i could get, as he's very skittish and has been hiding most of the time ive had him. ive only had him about 2 hours

He is a male chinese hamster and the very large testicles are absolutely normal for a Chinese if that is what you are meaning.
If he is acting normally and eating and moving around normally I wouldn't worry too much. Sometimes they get small injuries as babies and they can break bones which heal on their own and cause not further problems.
If in any doubt and it's not the testicles you mean then have a check up at the vets. Just find one who knows about hamsters so you may need an exotics.

Hello and welcome to HC!

The first time i saw a male chinese hamster i thought what an odd looking little creature and have wanted one ever since.

I was also alarmed by the appearance of their back end and the size of their testicles until i was told that this is perfectly normal. If that is what you are referring to.

Congratulations to your new friend who is a very lucky hamster to have found his forever home.

His back legs look a bit splayed out on that photo. Are they normally like that? ie does he drag his back legs behind him or walk normally? If his legs are working ok he's probably fine and as the others say, he's just a male Chinese hamster (they have a slightly longer tail and can wrap it round your finger at times ).

He will be very skittish at first. They need a good two weeks to adjust to a new cage and new environment so best thing is to not clean anything out for the first two weeks or move things around. So he scent marks and claims it as his territory and gets settled in, Then he should start being more confident. Adding new things is usually accepted and they like hidey places and houses that are dark inside, so adding something like that might be appreciated. Providing it doesnt mean moving things around. They settle more when they have a secure house that's dark inside. A child's shoebox or tissue box with the base cut out so it's open underneath is ideal - just cut a hole for a door. If you cut the hole at one end of a long side, the other end is dark (light doesn't go round corners).

Having said that, Chinese hamsters can be skitty - it may need time and patience - first for him to settle in and then to get used to you and be tame with you. During the first two weeks you could try feeding him treats through the mesh. If he shows signs of wanting to come out, you could get him out in a hamster ball (lower it in and let him walk in then pop the lid on). Then lift him out in the hamster ball and take it/lower it to a safe place to let him out - eg the bathtub or a taming area, Until he gets used to your hands and handling. If he's not showing signs of wanting to come out I'd leave it for the full two weeks and then get him out for some hand taming sessions.
