Is my hamsters tow or nail broken? Or something else?
Hi, a few days ago I noticed one of my hamsters toes being oddly red and swollen and naturally I thought that he must have just bumped it or hit it hard enough to make it swell and thought nothing of it. But yesterday I noticed it seemed to get must worse with a lot of scabbing it’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on with it because I’m not sure if this is normal for a broken nail or it is something worse like a broken toe. He has been moving fine and I haven’t noticed any limping, greater amount of sleeping, or a decline in energy since this happened. Here is a link to a google driver folder of photos if anyone could help me decide what is wrong and help figure out my next step.
- thanks

Re: Is my hamsters tow or nail broken? Or something else?
Sorry for reading this so late
I’m not a vet so I’m not sure what exactly a broken nail vs. toe looks like, but many rodents break their nail which can result in an infection.
Your pictures look similar to an infected one I saw online. If the toe is getting worse, I would recommend taking your hamster to the vet for some kind of antibiotics if they feel it’s necessary, or to check if it’s hurt worse than the nail

Hello and welcome to HC!
For some reason i didn't see this thread, so sorry.
What happened to your hamster? Did you take him to a vet? That's what i would have done.

Apologies from me too - not sure how your post got missed. As it was over 3 weeks ago now, what happened? Did you see the vet?
From the photos I can't tell which toe but it seems almost like his foot looks red and swollen. Is his other foot ok? Sometimes a vet will give antibiotics if they think it's infected. Depending on how hot and swollen it is. Sometimes these things, if minimal, right themselves (or you can bathe it in thyme tea which has antiseptic properties).
