Default Scent gland bleeding

I have just found quite a bit of dried blood in Loki's house. I did a little spot clean a couple of days a go and it was fine but it scared me what I saw today. I straight away checked Loki all over and his scent gland on his tummy looks very red so I would have to assume it came from there. It doesn't appear to be bleeding now but it does look a little sore. This has never happened before and I'm worried he may start bleeding again tonight! Obviously I will contact the vets tomorrow but is there anything I can do in the meantime to help him? He is currently on Metacam for old age.
In himself he appears very well and I was only thinking this morning how bright he looked!
I'm really worried now...

I think all the vets are closed tomorrow because of the jubilee bank holiday... does anyone recommend bathing his scent gland or will it be fine to leave until Saturday? I'm so worried if it starts bleeding again it may not stop!

I'm sorry to hear this but think that you are already doing everything you can for Loki.

Wait and see what the vet says. At least Loki's on Metacam already so any pain or discomfort will be taken care of.

You probably feel worse than Loki.

Personally, i'd leave it alone because you don't know what caused the bleed.

Vets are always available and have an out of hours emergency service should Loki start bleeding again or deteriorate in any way.

I live near a 24hr animal hospital. Do you have anything like that in your area? May be worthwhile looking into.

Thank you for your reply Ria P.
Have you experienced this with any of your hamsters, and if so, what was the cause and how did they get on? Can old hamsters recover from this?

No, i've never had a hamster with a bleeding scent gland but know how scary it is when a hamster has a bleed.

I got into a right panic when i saw Syrian Henry peeing blood even though Henry himself didn't seem bothered by it.

I'm not a vet so don't want to speculate on Loki's prognosis but hopefully someone will reply who has come across this before. Even then only a vet will be able to diagnose and treat Loki. They'll probably prescribe a course of antibiotics to rule out an infection unless there's a visible cause like an injury or cyst for example.

Thank you Ria P.
Thankfully no more bleeding last night and this morning his scent gland looks and a lot less red. I think he may be a little stressed from all my fussing and worrying last night so I am going to leave it today and contact the vets tomorrow. Fingers crossed it was just a one off but I will keep a very close eye on it.
Thank you for your help. X

Glad to hear that there was no more bleeding and the scent gland looks better today. We worry so much about our little friends but they are so precious.

They most certainly are precious. Loki is my little ray of sunshine and I just love him so much. I just wish with all my heart we got to have more time with our little ones.

Good luck at the vets. I hope it's something simple. It could be a number of things.
