Unhappy Hamster scratching - I think?

Hey, so my hamster has a pink spot with no hair just behind his ear. I've just noticed today so can't have been there long. At first I thought it might be a growth but after a closer look I think it looks more like it's from chafing or scratching. What is this likely to be? And what is likely to be causing it? I've not changed anything in his tank and he is nearly 2 years old so he is used to everything I use. Any opinions would be helpful!

Could you perhaps send a photo? There's certain areas where hamster hair thins, and especially due to his age it could be that.

Send a photo, however if you have strong concerns, please go to the vets.

The site isn't letting me upload a photo! I've tried but it just keeps saying the site can't handle the request right now. It's definitely not just thinning and I will definitely phone the vet in the morning. The vet isn't opened today however, so thought I'd ask here today.

By the looks of it, his ear on the bad side seems to be staying down and back while the other one is alert which is worrying too.

I'm just wondering if there is anything I should be considering that would be making him itch so badly?
In his cage I has kaytee clean and cozy, aspen, sand (not dust), grapevine wood, cork log and then just some general wee wooden houses from the pet shop. Nothing new though!

I think i have managed to attach a photo here! its hard to get one that isn't blurry since he is so fast, but it is really pink and not at all on the other side.

The skin looks quite pink. I'd get him checked out by a vet. He's a lovely colour.

Off topic. I've just noticed your wheel stand bottle holder. What a brilliant idea.

Definitely take him to the vets. It looks really inflamed.

Thought I'd update that we went to the vet today! They loved Winston and prescribed him some antibiotics, some anti inflammatory medicine and a skin wash to rub on the affected area.

Unfortunately, we are all scratching our heads as to what caused it!

The bottle stand was one of my smarter moments! Works an absolute treat. Never had any issues and I have a rock on top of the front part just to encourage nail filing and help weigh it down! Would recommend it to anyone looking for a freestanding bottle!

I am so pleased the vet visit went well. Hopefully the treatment will help poor Winston. How cute he was popular at the vets.
