Swollen belly??

Hello,

Nutmeg is pretty old (almost 2.5 years). She is still pretty active and perky, without as many signs of old age that would usually be in lots of hamsters. However, I noticed that her belly has become bigger and more round. I'm not sure if it is swollen or extra weight. She might have a bit of trouble climbing onto something because of the extra width. Other than that, she is her usual self. What is happening?

I would take her to the vet asap. It could be a build up of fluid, a cyst, a tumor, who knows but it doesn't sound right.

Also just to add, symptoms of a hamster being ill are so acute since they’re prey animals, they’re incredibly good at hiding pain. They can seem to be acting their usual self but something could be wrong. It might be mild signs like drinking more water which you may not even notice. Also, just because of the age I’d say it’s very important to check her at a vets.

Thank you. Unfortunately, most vets aren't open today so I will call tomorrow to to make an appointment.

We got back from the vet a little while ago. Unfortunately, the vet said that Nutmeg has a big tumor. She still seems like her normal self right now though, which is good.

I'm very sorry to hear that.
You'll have to keep a very close eye on Nutmeg because the tumor may affect the organs by squeezing them and you wouldn't want something to rapture.
Time now is very precious.
