Default Wet fur around mouth

Hi everyone, a couple days ago I noticed that my hamsters fur (syrian female) was wet around her mouth and down to her front paws. It only happened once and after about 20 minutes it was already pretty much drying. My hamster (oliva) doesn’t really enjoy being handled but I always do weekly “health checks”: I looked for wetness around her lower belly and tail but it was dry and clean, I also looked for scratches or blood around her mouth but everything was fine and I also checked her teeth which were healthy and not overgrown or damaged, her fur was shiny and her eyes, nose and ears were okay and healthy. She’s eating, playing, running and drinking regularly so I was thinking that maybe she could have been wet after grooming herself. Also she’s living in a large cage (600 square inches) with deep paper bedding, sand, a big wheel, fresh water and food everyday, and lots of natural chews. In my country (I’m from Italy) hamsters are not “popular pets” and many vets are not willing to visit her. Should I be concerned?
Also English is not my first language so it’s not perfect

I would guess that she got some water spilled down her front, or something like that. If it hasn't happened again and she is otherwise normal, I would think that she is okay

Hello and welcome to HC!

Your English sounds pretty perfect to me but i'm not a native English speaker either.

Does Olivia drink from a bottle or bowl? Bottles can leak and bowls can get tipped over so maybe she simply got wet from her water source.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Olivia drinks from a bowl so it might just be her drinking. It happened again twice in these days, but I checked on her and everything seems fine (also I think that if it was something to worry about, she would be wet everyday, but it only happens sometimes). I also thought that maybe it just gets kinda hot in her nest because she’s also breathing (she doesn’t sleeps in her hideouts but she sleeps in her borrows). I did call the vet and he said that since it’s something that only happens sometimes I shouldn’t really worry about it. what do you guys think?

try a water bottle if it doesn't happen anymore then you know it's the bowl and you might need to try a smaller one.

Hi everyone!
What a joy and what a wonder to discover this forum, where you can learn so much about hamsters.
I have recently adopted a two year old Syrian granny. He has dental disease and for weeks I have observed that his neck and chest area is wet. my vet told me that can be a sign of pain, but it's weird that it's only occasional. She has given me daily medicine for the pain and even so there are days when she is wet and I am desperate. I like the idea that you say, about what can be when you sleep, a kind of condensation of your breath.
I wanted to know if you have had that problem again and finally how you have solved it.

A big hug for this beautiful community

Hi everyone,
unfortunately my sweet girl passed away not so long ago. I noticed that she was acting weird and I took her to the vet multiple times but they said that she was just grumpy but very healthy (they examined her with lots of care so I’m not blaming anyone). When she passed away she was really skinny (almost like she lost all of her weight during the night), she was keeping her ears down and her head was (in my opinion) kinda swollen around her eyes (at first I thought about an ear or an eye infection but the vet ruled it out). Throughout these months, I sometimes found her with wet fur around her mouth again. At this point I still don’t know what it is caused by. My best guess is still that it could be caused by hamsters sleeping under bedding (and maybe a glass cage like mine, that doesn’t really allow the greatest ventilation)). Here in Italy, during summer it gets SO hot, and I did in fact ended up getting an air conditioner system for my pets.

About your hamster, I think that since they are on the elderly side, it could probably be because of their age. I personally think that if it was something that could cause any pain (an infection or a dental problem) it shouldn’t be something sporadic (since infections don’t really go away by their own). I would suggest maybe trying to keep the cage clean around their nest area and switch to a bottle instead of a bowl. Also some materials (like linum and hemp) are more indicated to keep their cage fresh and cool (especially during summer, so maybe I would give that a try).

Hopefully you will get answers soon xxx

I am really sad reading what happened and I feel bad for your loss. I wish our friends were forever
my little furball is also in a glass enclosure, formerly a fish house, so we have more in common.
all I want is to do everything possible to make her well, pain free and happy.
precisely today it gave me a scare when it began to sneeze non-stop, the substrate that I put on it released dust and I had to change it completely. after that he had no moisture on his neck or more sneezing
