Re: Does this hamster look strange?
Hello. It's difficult to tell from the angle of the photo. The hamster is a long haired Syrian hamster - possibly still a baby as his face looks quite babyish. Is it your hamster?
The hamster does seem to have a lack of fur on his leg, which could be fur loss (inadequate nutrition and lack of protein can do that, or it may be if they are a baby then the fur hasn't fully grown on the legs yet, or if it's an older hamster, fur loss for some other reason. But the face looks babyish. (Shorter nose and less elongated face than a fully grown hamster). Hamsters under a year need a high level of protein - 18 to 20% in the diet. Malnourishment can cause fur issues.
He/she looks very cute though.

Re: Does this hamster look strange?
He is not mine. I just take in hamsters around the area and rehome them.
This little guy is a result of an 18 year old boy believing his friend telling him that hamsters cannot get pregnant if they are less than a year. A litter of 7 and only 3 have gone to a new home.
I've agreed that had any hamsters have not found a home that I would take them in. I would need to find the cages beforehand, and have asked about on Facebook but my areas relatively scarce of decent hamster cages.

Is this one of the litter then? Could you take a few more photos perhaps - without freaking him/her.

He isn't with me, if they do not find homes by July I'd take them in. I was just overly concerned for the appearance.

They are a BYB/accidental litter.

Re: Does this hamster look strange?
The hamster could be a hydro hamster going by the appearance of his face.

That's what I thought, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions.

Here are more photos of the litter. I thought they all looked a little odd. What do you think of the littermates ?

Re: Does this hamster look strange?
And what dreadful cages. Is he trying to kill them off by letting them break their necks in that high cage, i wonder.
Some look a little odd but may grow out of it. Probably down to bad breeding. The guy is obviously clueless.
Poor little things, i hope they'll find good homes with people who care enough to take them to a vet, should they develop health issues.
I've never actually come across a hydro hamster but have read that some unscrupulous backyard breeders breed incompatible hamsters on purpose.
Hopefully those are healthy. Hamsters do have differently shaped faces but i understand your concern here. I'd wonder as well.

Re: Does this hamster look strange?
I had to Google that. Not heard of a hydro hamster before. From that side pic he does look to have a short nose/squashed up face. The pic after that on the first link, he looks ok (if it’s the same hamster which it seems to be).
If he is a hydro hamster he shouldn’t go to just any old home. He’ll need special care.

Re: Does this hamster look strange?
Should any of the hamsters not find homes by July 15th, I might take them in. Still looking for decent sized cages and carriers in Torbay but the areas really scarce. All the ones that come to me will go to good homes (I have about 5 people asking if I have hamsters available) but not sure what that number will be.
