Covid and hamsters
I have a russian dwarf and a robo. OH and I have just gone down with Covid. He is recuperating well, while I am feeling really shoddy. I do most of the hamster feeding as they are my hamsters. Is it okay to still feed them? There is no-one else in the house to do it, but I would hate to pass on how I am feeling to them. Is there much likelihood of it jumping the species?

Re: Covid and hamsters
I am really sorry to hear you and your partner have covid. I really hope you both recover soon. You could wash your hands before and after feeding your hamsters?

Re: Covid and hamsters
I agreed with taking care by washing hands before and after feeding.
In addition, since the virus is spread in the air, you could wear a mask while you are anywhere near the cages to prevent you exhaling anything into the air near them.
Otherwise keep away from the cages until you are through this.
Hope you both recover soon.

Re: Covid and hamsters
Similar scenario here. OH went down with covid and has a lot of symptoms while i have some but weirdly, still testing negative.
Handwashing is the major precaution you can take and i have put cuddling and kissing the hamsters on hold which no doubt, they're very pleased about.
I let them out to run around as per normal. It's easy to forget about not getting too close. This morning i noticed that ghost hamster Jim had long nails so i took him out and cut them but forgot to put a mask on.
I think the chances of hamsters catching covid is quite small. Another thing to do is air the house by opening the windows a couple of times per day.
Wishing you both a speedy recovery.

Re: Covid and hamsters
Ria, that's interesting - my lateral flow tests were negative too, despite having lots of symptoms, and it was only having the PCR that confirmed it.
Holly (robo) never lets me touch her anyway. Even the merest suggestion of a finger has her scurrying away, and sometimes even just opening the detolf lid. But Enigma loves being fed tasty treats by hand, and doesn't mind a stroke. I will try and minimise that for now.
Hope you and OH are feeling much better soon.

Re: Covid and hamsters
As others have said, wash hands and wear a mask when feeding.
Hope you feel better soon
