Question Sleeping so much but restless when awake?

Hi I recently got a female syrian, she’s around 2 months old. I notice she sleeps a lot. She sleeps all day and wakes up around 9 - 11pm and when I check on her again at 8am she’d be asleep. in the few hours i manage to see her awake she’ll be so restless and running around her cage non stop and climbing the bars. my previous syrian wasnt like this so just wondering if it’s normal. Thanks!

Yes, the sleeping pattern is normal. You can't ever compare one hamster with another because they all have their own individual personalities and they can be very different from each other.

If she's running around non stop and climbing the bars she may be trying to tell you something. Does her environment work for her?
A female Syrian needs about 100cmx50cm of continuous floor space and deep, paperbased substrate. Is her wheel big enough and working ok? A Syrian needs a 28/30cm wheel and lots of stimulating enrichment to keep them entertained but you know all that because you had a Syrian before. I'd also check her water bottle to make sure it's working ok.

It's very early days and you both need to get to know each other. You say that you got her recently so she's still going through the settling in phase and needs to learn to adjust to her new life.

All hamsters are different, no two are exactly alike.

Shes new, give her time to adjust.

If she continues acting as hyper as you describe, especially climbing bars, I'd suggest upgrading her cage. Female hamsters are usually a bit more energetic than males, but if she has the proper cage size she shouldn't be climbing bars. Offer her many toys, a big wheel, and lots of bedding. In the USA the minimum cage size for hamsters is 450sq inches, but for Syrians its best recommended 620sq inches, which equals to 1574.8 sq cm. The bigger the better, especially if you have lots of toys and enrichment.

For farther cage help I suggest the YouTube channel Victoria Raechel. She has many videos on cage enrichment and other all hamster things.

Best of wishes xx!
