Exclamation Syrian hamster excessive drinking and urination

Hi, i recently rescued a male syrian hamster which is almost 2 years old (i wasn't told his exact age apart from that he's almost 2) just over 1 week ago, he was in really poor conditions, a tiny cage, wood shavings, no wheel, not even being fed hamster food because the owners said they couldn't be bothered to buy more, and all his sawdust was covered in urine and faeces, he did however have water which is the one good thing.

He has settled in really well but im concerned about him. He finishes his whole bottle of water in 2 days (a 140 ml bottle) which to me seems a little too fast for a hamster to be finishing when i have another hamster which drinks from a bowl and he doesn't finish it that fast. He then sleeps a lot, and urinates a lot, he had a sand bath and he filled that up with urine in just one day so i've changed the sand from that to paper towel and his paper bedding as that's less expensive than changing that sand every day since he doesn't even use the sand to bath in since he fills it with urine, he also gets one spoon full of food in his bowl and he takes every last piece which i guess is a good thing so he's eating fine. He also walks around extremely slowly as if he's in stuck slow motion but that could be his old age? i've carried out a health check and he seems fine by that but i'm not sure.

i might just be overthinking but i'm just concerned about how much he's drinking and urinating, does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

I would take him to the vet because he may need some painrelief like Metacam which he could stay on.

I think this is quite a common health issue with elderly hamsters and i have come across it before with our hamsters. As they age and near the end of their lives their organs start to shut down especially the kidneys causing symptoms like you describe.

I doubt that the vet would have a cure but then again, it may be something treatable like an infection only a vet could treat but i would get him checked out to at least make him more comfortable.

It may have happened late in his life but at least your hamster has the opportunity now to experience love and the care he so needs and that every hamster deserves.

Thank you for the reply (: i'm going to try book an appointment at the vets for next weekend as that's the only time i'll be able to take him but for now im just going to monitor and take notes on his behaviour and other things.

Hello! The same thing happened to my previous hamster. I also rescued him, he was peeing/drinking a lot. But he was active at first. He became slow later one day, and passed away in 3 days. His excessive urination caused the fungus in one corner of the cage, which I didn’t notice and still can’t forgive myself. The fungus caused respiratory infection.
What I didn’t know about him from the previous owner - he was diabetic! That’s the reason for peeing and drinking. So you have to change his diet, take out everything that might be sweet, like carrots for example. There also should be special diabetic foods. Now i buy little one’s diabetic mix for dwarfs. And don’t overfeed. That peeing and drinking is 100% his previous poor diet result, and maybe the sudden change is also affecting him. Just eliminate sweets, and visit a vet asap.
In terms of slowing down, be careful. Yes it might be age, but it depends. Was he slow from the very first day you took him? You mentioned that previous owner has kept his cage dirty, urine everywhere. Maybe the fungus was there already? If it’s more than 3-4 days since than - maybe nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye on urine, and clean it immediately.

I also forgot to tell. Diabetes causes overeating. In ideal we should change ham’s food every 2-3 days. Cause healthy hamster doesn’t eat that fast. Idk maybe Syrians do. Just learn how to control his amount of food intake. Im not sure about this one, i never had a syrian hammer) just in case ask a vet . Good luck

Oh.! The last thing. My hamster was also kind of slow and sleepy, that’s a diabetes sign. He just used to workout from time to time. And when he got infected he became lethargic, that’s all the difference.
