Default Vet injected hamster with antibiotics without weighing him first?

My male Syrian is sick so the vet recommended we give him antibiotics (enrofloxacin)

I asked if they could give them the oral suspension in a syringe but they said that kind doesn't exist in my country, only pills and injections. Before I knew it, they quickly administered it to him via a small prick on his lower back.

Once I left the office, I realized they didn't even weigh him once during the visit nor was I asked for his weight. He's 128 grams. He's doing fine now afterwards and running and eating, but aren't medicines supposed to be administered based off the math of the exact weight in grams? Could this have harmed my hamster? The vet wants him to go in for another injection but I'm worried about it now.

Hello and welcome to HC!

Vets usually weigh hamsters to convert medication that is manufactured for other animals and monitoring weight is important because unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of an illness. That's what i've concluded from taking various hamsters to the vet.

I'd keep an eye on your hamster which you are doing anyway and next time you see the vet don't be shy to ask questions. I always write down what i want to know so i won't forget to ask a question i need the answer for.

That's strange cause mine asked me today if I wanted them to inject my hamster or give it orally and I opted for oral suspension. Basically what she did is mix the antibiotic and painkiller (not together) with a liquid (forgot the english name) and put it in a very small syringe with markings so I know how much to give each day (that was for painkiller). For the antibiotic she gave me one small syringe with the right amount per day. I said strange cause if they do injections surely mixing the meds for oral suspension is pretty much the same thing?

May I ask where you're from cause your name sounds like hrčci which is Croatian for hamsters?

It is a bit concerning but maybe injection dosage is worked out differently to oral dosage - I’m not sure. Eg with humans an injection would be a standard dose regardless of the humans weight - just different for adults or children.

Although I’ve just checked the baytril leaflet on web page and it does say it’s worked out by weight for injection. I am sure there will be a bit of leeway but it does sound like he guessed the weight! Are you sure he didn’t weigh your hamster? Were you there all the time? Sometimes they do it quickly on a flat bed scale without telling you what they’re doing.

Overdose is fatal so if your hamster is doing ok then I wouldn’t worry.
