Default Pink Urine/Should I be Concerned?

Hello Hamster Central!
I'm not sure if I'm doing this right (the posting), but I have a young, female dwarf hamster who's urine is pink. I've heard that this might be caused by a urinary infection or from beet roots in the food mix. (I've checked and there are some beet roots in her food)
She is very active, bright-eyed and soft-furred. She seems very fit and healthy otherwise. I've only noticed now that I've switched her bedding to white bedding.
If I should take her to the vet I will. I'm just wondering if any of you guys have any experiences like this and if I should be concerned.
Thank you!

Hi there,
I have experienced this a couple of times with my male dwarf hamster. It was hard to tell if the discoloured urine was blood or the result of him eating something (he also has small bits of beetroot in his food).
I started a thread on here a while back, I will try and copy and paste the link.
I did take my little boy to the vets in the end and the vet prescribed him some medication, although they certainly couldn't say for sure if he had a urinary infection or not as he had no other obvious symptoms. However, I did find it made a difference and his urine has been pretty normal ever since.
As she appears very fit and healthy, you could try removing the beetroot from her food for a few days and see if the colour of her urine returns to normal.
Hope this link works!
Blood in urine?

I would remove the beetroot from her food temporarily and see if it continues. If it's from the beetroot it should stop within a couple of days. If it doesn't go away she should see a vet.

It is quite common for dried beetroot or treats containing beetroot to colour the urine in this way. I've noticed it multiple times in hamsters and gerbils.

Hello RolyRocks and Sushi 78!
Thank you so much for replying. I will take your advice in remove the beetroot from her food. I actually took Penny (my hamster) to the vet yesterday and he prescribed some antibiotics. I am a little disappointed through because he didn't test the pee or anything, just glanced at it. I am giving her plain yogurt with the antibiotics to keep up her probiotics.

I also had an issue with this before and it ended up being the beet root. Took a day or two to fully get it out of her system (probably cause she already stashed some more elswhere where I couldn't find). Hope it ends up being the same!

I think as vets can't say for sure whether it's a urinary infection or not, they put them on antibiotics as a precautionary measure. I think it's quite difficult to get a urine sample as they can't test urine on bedding.
I hope Penny is taking the antibiotics ok. Loki, my hamster did not like the taste so I had to disguise it in baby food!
Please let us know how she gets on, fingers crossed her urine will be back to normal colour in no time!

Hello all!
After switching her food and giving her antibiotics for four days her pee is yellow! Weather it was the food or a urinary infection I don’t know but, she is doing very well and is just as cute as ever. Thank you all for you’re help.
