Thanks for all the info on the baby food, I am going take a look and see what I can find! I know he used to love the Cow and Gate Cauliflower Cheese with his baytril medication and that was suitable for freezing too. Then it became difficult to find that but i will take another look.
Do you give the same amount of porridge as you would baby food, and do you make it with milk or water?
I will try a few a different things and see what he enjoys most.
I have ordered the Science Selective hamster food and some Organic Shelled Hemp seeds which should be delivered today. I always give him a pinch of linseeds daily so I will mix them together like you suggested.

Thanks again so much for all your help. Loki is my first dwarf hamster and my first elderly hamster. Roly, my syrian very sadly passed away at only 16 months old.

Hi again, I just have a quick question regarding baby food?
Loki is very much enjoying a small amount in his bowl, but he doesn't eat it straight away, he eats it at some point during the night.
After looking into freezing baby food, I read that baby food should not be left out for more than 2 hours due to bacteria growth. Obviously I refrigerate the jar after opening but could I be making him sick by leaving baby food it in his cage over night? I tried to give him some during he day but he got a little stressed and wouldn't eat it.

Ugh just lost my reply! Fine to leave baby food out overnight- our hamster did that too. Ate a bit then ate the rest during the night. Porridge - make with water - milk not good for them. Yes baby good harder to find - pandemic shortages and some not made any more. I used to get them from Tesco or Sainsbury’s (who hardly have any choice of suitable ones) and sometimes from Amazon.

Tesco has this one (only suitable savoury one I could find),

Hipp Organic Carrot & Peas Baby Food 4+ Month 125G - Tesco Groceries

Sainsbury also sell that one - plus this one - which was all our hamsters favourites.

It does work out a bit expensive if you have to waste some every couple of days - so I used to do baby food for 2 days then this porridge for 2 days (which is easy to mix up and tasty like baby food). Obviously normal porridge is fine - but I found this pouch lasted a very long time and they adored it being strawberry flavoured. It’s more like a ready brek type instant porridge.

Thank you so much for your replies.

The Hipp Carrot and Peas baby food is one that I managed to get in Tesco and he really liked it, shame it only lasts for 24 hours once opened. I will take a look for the other one as I am sure he would like that too but we don't have a Sainsbury any where nearby.
I was surprised how limited the baby range was, I looked in Tesco, Lidl, Boots and Superdrug without much success.
I purchased two of Tesco own brand ones, 'Carrot, Sweet Potato and Swede' and 'Green Veggies', but both say consume immediately! I also picked up a Heinz Chicken dinner (no onions or garlic) but he wasn't too keen on that one.
Unfortunately, he isn't too keen on his soaked Science Pellets either or the porridge with water I made him. I will definitely see if I can get the strawberry porridge as that sounds a lot tastier!

I weighted him yesterday as I really thought he had put on a little weight but sadly he has lost 2 more grams since I weighed him about 10 days a go.

Thank you!

I see Morrisons and Waitrose apparently sell the strawberry porridge online, but I rang my nearest Waitrose and they don't stock it unfortunately. I am just going to pop up to Morrisons but it is a tiny one so don't think I will have any luck there either.

I contacted Ella's Kitchen regarding their dry porridge and they said there have been lots of hold ups countrywide recently but they are working really hard to get everything back in stock as soon as possible.

I did however find a Cow and Gate Red Berry Wholegrain dry Porridge with Spelt that I think looks suitable. Please let me know if it doesn't sound safe for hamsters...
The ingredients are : Milled Cereals (96%) (Wholegrain wheat (44%), Durum wheat semolina (40%), Wholegrain spelt (6%), Wholegrain millet (6%)), Strawberry flakes (Strawberry, Rice) (2%), Raspberry flakes (Raspberry, Rice) (2%), Vitamin B1.
They also had a banana one but the sugar content was a lot higher.

If anyone is interested I have contacted some companies regarding freezing baby food and this is what they said...

Ella's Kitchen - You can freeze the contents of their 4 month pouches and smoothie fruits by squeezing them into sterilised ice cube trays. Freeze within 24 hours of opening.
They don't recommend freezing their 6, 7 and 10 month pouches due to more grown up ingredients.

HiPP Organic - They do not widely recommend freezing due to hygiene risks, however it is technically possible and they would recommend for fruits and vegetables to use within 3 months. If the products contain milk, meat or poultry use within 1 month of freezing. They advise to freeze all food immediately after opening.

Heinz - You can batch freeze in jars and pouches or into an ice cube tray. Fruit and veg purees keep for up to 8 weeks.

Cow & Gate - They have discontinued baby jars and pouches. If you have any, they don't advise freezing but leave the decision up to you.

Tesco's own brand - Anything can be frozen but again they leave it up to you, but if they haven't advised a product can be frozen on the packaging, they don't recommend it because the product may lose freshness.
