Default Fleas

So I’m trying to keep this super short to get to the point. We still have our rabbit but we’re still looking for a home or adoption centre I don’t know what to do right at this moment. Most a rabbits diet is hay and I give her science select Timothy hay, the first bag I had no issues with. I have mentioned I was worried about this occurring before because I have no freezer but the second lot I got was absolutely infested with bugs.

We keep it in a storage cupboard to try and avoid this and I was baking before giving the rabbit but not the entire bag at a time. Just enough for her portion. We actually saw bugs appearing around the house first I hadn’t sat and stared at the hay to notice the bugs moving. When I did find out I baked the entire load and it’s now in outside storage and I bake a second time before giving to my rabbit now.

I bought some Bob Martin flea spray, which I hadn’t heard of before but you can spray in the household and on pets and is meant to immobilise fleas. I sprayed the cat as I know it’s safe for her and avoided the rabbit as I wasn’t 100% sure it was safe on her but sprayed all around her room. I think it worked well in the house as I’ve only seen two bugs since spraying two days ago.

But I swear the cat has some, sprayed her a couple times now and not sure she’s better so getting her some tablets tomorrow and if they don’t work within 48hrs I’ve got to take her to the vets because she seems restless. Now today I saw some on the rabbit (which is weird because she isn’t scratching?) so I sprayed her with the rule one spray per kg of weight. I haven’t seen anymore since but too soon to say for sure.

I am really concerned for my hamster though. She has zero signs of fleas at this stage, no scratching, or missing fur nothing unusual. I sprayed the carpet round her cage it doesn’t have much of a smell but I didn’t want to spray on her cage because of chemicals/ fragrances. She’s got two doors between the rabbit and the cat. Just wondering what I can do to protect her because I don’t think flea removal is as easy for a hamster as it is a cat. Is there like a repellent or something or any advice anyone can give?

Thanks in advance!

I think it's very unusual for a hamster to get fleas but not impossible. It sounds like you're doing everything you can at the moment. So just keep your fingers crossed. If the hamster did happen to get fleas you'd need a vet to prescribe something - it wouldn't be something you could buy off the shelf. I have a feeling though that your hamster won't get them. Two doors between hamster and the rest and you've put deterrant round the cage - and fleas are more interested in cats (and humans!).

I read that hamsters can only get fleas from cats and dogs. A cat needs to be kept away from a hamster anyway so Mitzi should be fine.

Oh thank god! I did wonder how she was so fine but I think the poor cat has become the host. I went to see a vet today and got some flea and worm treatment for her so fingers crossed. Haven’t seen anymore in the house either but I keep spraying just to be sure. The last few days have been so stressful all because of hay!!!

I can well imagine. Maybe the family could get you a freezer for Christmas, lol.

I hate getting kitchen things for Christmas normally because I always think it indirectly is making me the cook, but yes I think a freezer at this stage would be an absolute godsend and probably the best gift I could have right now 😂
