Ask for a referral. The vet won’t mind.

Try wrapping him in a flannel or small towel. That sometimes works.

I still can't believe they haven't given oral antibiotics. If it's an abscess that would help. It might be worth giving the vet a call and asking about having oral antibiotics "to hit it hard".

I'm giving these eye drops at the moment. There's no indication of an abcess.

This morning I managed to open his eye properly like the vet did. The eye drops are like water this time rather than like goo, so I'm having to figure out how to drop those into his eye. It's easy to try, but less easy to know if I succeeded. I'll keep at it.

Not easy. Hope they help this time.

Thanks, yes I'm keeping bashing away at it.

The drops are odd because I open his eye and put the drop on and it sits up on the tip of eyelashes, and I haven't found how to get it past his eyelashes. It's very hard to open his eye fully, without having to use a lot of force.

I tried wrapping him in a tea towel this morning, and it's very hard to hold him like that because he moves like liquid soap, almost turning round inside his own skin.

The best way I have found to keep him still is by holding onto the hair on the top of his head, but it's not the nicest thing to do to an animal.

I really worry for the fella, because it's been weeks of doing this twice a day, and now three times. He's been very good and hasn't bitten me, but he must be pretty cheesed off.

He is still his normal weight and still stuffs his pouches with food at every opportunity. Yesterday he filled his pouches so full of nuts that he had to hold the last one in his teeth to carry it away. He looked like an aticulated lorry.

Poor Roc but i had to laugh at the vision of an articulated lorry in the shape of a hamster.

I just managed to get Roc's eye open and scared myself silly in the process. I got hold of the fur above and below his eye and gently pulled, and the eyelids popped open, and there was no eye there. Aaargh! <faints>

Anyway, it turns out that because Roc is made of 98% elastic, he can actually move his skull around inside his head skin, and so when I popped his eyelids open, I saw his skull underneath instead of his eye.

I let go and he popped back into his nest, but when he came back out a couple of minutes later, his eye was completely open and his big round black eye was there in its proper place again. Phew!

I still can't work out how to hold his eye open and drop a drop of antibiotic into the open eye. I don't have enough hands. I dropped a drop onto his half-open eye and then rubbed it on to the surface, so hopefully that will help.

I used to be able to get eyedrops in cats' eyes, but hamsters are much harder because of the internal parts of the hamster being able to move around in side the hamster skin.

I think I figured out how to get drops into Roc's eye. The thing that works is to put my palm on his back to stop him walking away, then my index finger on top of his head and stroke away from his eye. Then I put my thumb on his cheek and stroke down the way, so that his eyelids part. Then I squirt the eyedrop rather generously with my other hand onto his open-ish eye. If I just do one drop it doesn't go in, but if I do about 3 drops then it goes all over his eye area-ish and I think I'm in with a chance.

I think I got the eye drops in twice now, because twice his has done that whole-body flinch that I do myself when the optician tests me for glaucoma by puffing air onto the surface of the eye. I can't actually see if the eye drops go in because it all happens so fast and he is wriggling.

I'm just writing all this down in case someone in future is in the same situation and would like to know.
