Default Re: Conjunctivitis still getting worse after two sets of antibiotics

I work with people who don't have the mental capacity to make informed choices. Same applies to toddlers and animals so all we can do is act in their best interest which of course involves the input of relevant professionals.

The reason i suggested longterm Metacam is based on my experience and observations with my own hamsters.
Yes, they can't consent or tell me if and where they have discomfort so it's crucial to closely observe their body language and behaviour. While on Metacam they were more active and appeared to be in better physical and mental condition.

Language can be a barrier same as culture which i appreciate because english isn't my native tongue and i remember the fustration of trying to communicate when i first arrived in this country.
You could contact the vet via email to avoid trying to understand their foreign accent.

Just to summorize. Both vets refused to pts Roc. One suggested to remove the eye and the other suggested pain relief/anti inflammatory medication?

You could get a third opinion by locating an english educated/speaking exotics vet at a different practice if you feel that you can't get a sensible conversation at your current practice.

Thanks so much for your kind reply.

I spoke to the practice manager, who was extremely kind and sensible. I explained Roc's full circumstances. She said she understands that with the bigger picture taken into account it may make sense for him to be pts, and that it is our decision to make, as we know him.

I'm going to speak to a native English speaking exotic vet over the phone next week and we will make the decision then.

Hi,

I wondered if I might just come back to let you know that Roc is gone now. I managed to get in touch with the native English speaking hamster vet and we had a chat on the phone. She agreed that Roc had really been through enough medical treatment and that there was no reason to expect that anything else would improve his situation. A few days after we had stopped treatment, the eye injection had come right back. So he was put to sleep yesterday.

I wanted to thank you again for all of your kind advice and helpful listening.

Best wishes,

Jennifer

I am so sorry to hear about Roc and sorry I didn't see the updates earlier, because had something similar with our last Syrian. I learned a lot about eye problems and they are quite serious in terms of suffering and treatment options. The standard treatment is to remove the eye to prevent pain and suffering - especially as once it protrudes they are already blind in that eye. But that depends on age and fitness. I had a similar dilemma in that not having the eye removed would mean recurring infection, but having it removed was too big a surgery in an older hamster and with the possibility there may be a tumour behind the eye.

You have helped him on his way to prevent further suffering and he's playing free now over the rainbow bridge - free from pain.

I am very sorry for your loss - it's hard. I think eye problems are some of the hardest to deal with.

Hi Serendipity,

Thank so much for telling me about that. I really had no idea what I was taking on when I first started treating Roc's eye problem. Poor fella. Oh well. I'm glad he's free of it now.

Thanks so much for all of your help.
