Default Handling time per day

I’ve always been curious as to how much time you should actually spend with your hamster per day. And whenever I search it it says a minimum of 10-15 minutes handling time a day and I couldn’t see a thread on here on the topic.

If I can I like to let my hamster out for up to 2 hours before I go bed in spread out intervals (to give toilet breaks etc.) it normally ends up being an hour though especially with winter making me feel more tired earlier.

I only actually handle her in this time with my hands for about 10 minutes just in my bed so she remembers my scent. I might sit on the floor with her while she runs but most the time I leave her to it.

I presume this is okay as anytime out the cage must be good for them but I just wondered if anyone knows the recommended?

It depends on the hamster. There isn't really a recommended amount of time. Some of them are quite happy with no handling at all, and others can never get enough attention.

I try to give Bramble about half of hour of free roaming time at least a couple of times a week, and most days I pick her up and hold her/stroke her for a bit. There are days when I don't pick her up at all, just because I'm busy/tired. She's a very outgoing hamster and likes to be fussed over. Other hamsters are more self-contained and don't really appreciate attention much.

I think it is a good idea to try to handle a hamster on a regular basis if you can because you're more likely to notice health issues such as lumps etc. Bramble has a lump on her chest which is invisible under her fur and I only noticed it by feeling it. I also find you can sometimes get a sense if something has changed by the way they feel in your hand, whether they feel lighter or more bony, or their posture is different.

Well that seems very reasonable and reassures me a bit. Like last night I was knackered but I thought I’d better give her some free time out but it’s good to know you don’t have to every day.

My one is quite active so I guess it’s good to let her roam as much as possible but as you say some are more laid back or prefer to burrow so won’t need to come out as much. That’s probably why there isn’t a recommended amount because owners need to figure it out theirselves.
