That’s a good point. We can all be ready at different times. Some people wait - some get another one straight away because they miss the care routine and want to carry on hamstering. So it’s individual. I think many people will sat they had a “heart hamster” - one they were so bonded to that that experience often doesn’t happen quite the same again. Just different. I’m not surprised you didn’t bond with the Robos though - they can be hard to tame and handle at the best of times and a pair are less likely to bond with an owner when they have company.

It’s maybe too soon to think about it right now x

Very rare for tumours to appear over night im nearly 100% sure what happened to girl was she had a twisted, folded or blocked intestine! Seen it alot and how your describing it tells me this was the cause. Can happen real quick and unless you get to the vets within the first hour of it happening unfortunately the outcome is inevitable. One of the main causes in hamsters is the choice of bedding they use as hamsters stuff it in there pouches and can easily swallow some. All it takes is one longish piece of a cotton type of bedding to be swallowed and as it doesn't tear easily will wrap round the intestine folding it and knotting it a causing a major life threatening blockage it's called 'intussusception'. Parasites can also cause this but its not as quick as eating bedding and doesn't usually happen over night.

I have thought long and hard on this now and I really don’t think it was anything constipation related. (Either way I am still going to use paper bedding only from now on)

The report below describes the type of constipation you’re talking about and it describes it at the lower end of the hamster. It also says the anus can prolapse which I’ve linked a picture of. I also will put another image showing constipation at the base of a hamster.

https://www.cambridge.org/core/servi...en_hamster.pdf

The more I look into it, the more I think it is some sort of tumour. Again I’ll put two pictures below but I couldn’t find much on ruptured ones. Only lumps.

I also found this site below where the tummy had bloated and was a purply colour just like Dafdaf. And they thought it was constipation but like people were saying it’s the tummy area not the intestine area.

Cookie The Hamster Is Bloated! - Ailments & Injuries - Hamster Hideout Forum

I will include a before and after picture of dafdaf. I didn’t share this initially as I don’t want people to see her in that state, but maybe it will help someone else in the future. She was just over a year old which is also the average age for Syrians to get tumours.

I did notice the before picture when she was on her back some pinkish spots? I only saw them after I looked back on the picture. She was so fluffy I wonder if maybe she did have signs but I didn’t see them.

Also every symptom matches a tumour, even the limp the day before apparently they do this as the tumour grows. I just thought she’d fell. I only felt the lumps on the day and I swear they weren’t there before.

I still don’t understand how it happened so quickly.

RIP my little dafdaf ❤️🐹

These are of daf daf, the poorly one she died around an hour later after the photo was taken.

The back one was taken five days before.

For some reason the tumour ones won’t upload but the second link shows a suspected one in a Syrian anyway.

EDIT I had to take poorly daf daf picture off I can’t put it on the internet for all to see, she’s so bad in that picture makes me cry. But it is a purple swollen tummy like I’ve said.

It is so sad Daf Daf died and I think the reason that happened is now not really that important - Lilafernim is grieving for Daf Daf and it’s all very sad. My feeling with hamsters generally is, sometimes we will never know what caused them to die. Particularly when they are elderly. When they’re not that elderly it is clearly something acute and regardless of what it was we can only move forwards and do the best we can with another hamster. Genetics also play a part.

Thank you for your support ❤️ As you say I do find it very hard to accept it, two weeks ago on Wednesday she passed away and I’m still in shock. I hope nothing I did caused it, but at the end of the day I loved her until the end and still do and always will. Thank you for understanding!

HAVE YOU BEEN TOLD ABOUT THIS CONDITION!

My mums a vet and iv just asked her about ur female straight away she said she said ur hamster probably had a closed pyometra hamsters with closed pyometra is really serious condition because the cervix is closed there is no outlet for the infection to drain from the body. Pus then accumulates inside the infected uterus, and over a short period of time the build up of infected material causes the abdomen to become swollen, and considerably distended. A closed PYOMETRA IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE or detect until it is in the advanced stages of abdomen distension as there is no, or very little, noticeable discharge from the opening. However, symptoms in both cases may include loss of appetite increased drinking and urinating. Bacteria and other toxins may leak across the uterine walls and then into the bloodstream causing Sepsis: (blood poisoning) if urgent treatment is not sought. This can happen in both cases of a closed or an open pyometra. Once this occurs other organs such as the liver may not be able to cope in filtering out the toxins. Toxins then accumulate in the blood and eventually the brain. Signs of a build-up of toxins in the blood may include neglect of appearance, unresponsiveness, irritability, a refusal to eat and drink loss of balance, stumbling, shaking, coma and eventually death. Or the uterus may eventually rupture and the infection escapes into the abdomen causing peritonitis.
Advances have been made in treating hamsters with pyometra, see your vet if any of these symptoms become apparent. The only option in many cases may be the surgical removal of the uterus, this will remove the infection and prevent uterine rupture, and of course any recurrence of the disease.

I have heard of this before but she was always so clean, I never really though that would happen but I know it is common.

Could you ask your mum for me if it’s a painful death? She looked like she was but I don’t want to think that she was as I couldn’t do anything to help…

Also in the last like 20 minutes of her life, she started sort of ‘fitting’ but it almost looked like she was running on her wheel. I like to think she was hallucinating and was happy because she’d bend her back slightly and her little legs went (almost as if she was running). It was awful to watch but I hope she was just running on her wheel.

Thank you so so much for asking ❤️ It’s nice to at least have some idea of what has happened and it does sound like that. It was her abdomen we first noticed and it did happen very quickly. I had checked for discharge and she only got wet tail on the last day really.

Could I also ask, for future reference is it best to always get cervix removed early on? Or would it be something vets can only do if the condition develops? I know they’re tiny creatures so it’s probably very difficult to do and I wouldn’t want to cause a hammie a poorer quality of life by having this done.

Thank you again!

Lilafernim, please don't torture yourself by asking about the way Daf Daf died.

You are grieving, you are feeling guilty and you are not alone.
Many of us had self doubts after losing a hamster and many of us blame ourselves thinking we haven't done enough or made the wrong decision. It is a natural process of grieving and time is the only thing that will eventually ease your turbulent emotions.
The circumstances and speed of Daf Daf's death make it a lot more difficult to accept and come to terms with what happened.
In future and if in doubt, take your hamster to a vet, better once too many than not enough.
I very much doubt that a vet could have saved Daf Daf but they do have 24hr emergency cover. You could enquire about it now so you know, should you ever need one in the future.

It is really hard the suddenness. It’s the first pet I’ve ever had that didn’t really show any symptoms and passed away so suddenly.

It hasn’t helped that she was so young too, it feels like I’ve missed a lifetime with her.

Thank you so much for what you have said.

I think that’s a good idea about the vets also so if anything happens in the future I know exactly what to expect from the vets.

I’d definitely be more relaxed over it all if I knew exactly what happened. You start to second think everything you do but the more I think about it, I do honestly believe by the time she actually became ill, a vets was too late of an option.

I just miss her, especially at nighttime as that’s when she’s normally come out.

Thank you so much though, this forum definitely helps me feel less alone in it all ❤️
