Unhappy Elderly hamster woke up wobbly with a swollen face and eye problems. Stroke?

Hello, I have a 2.3 year old female Syrian who has been slowing down a lot these past couple weeks. She spends a lot of time in her hide and sleeps most of the time, but tonight she woke up for water and I noticed her face was swollen, her eyes were runny, one eye is suddenly cloudy and she was wobbly and weak. I had to block her from nearly falling into her water dish. She is still trying to drink and took a piece of fruit from me but seems so frail. She didn't look this way yesterday. Could she have had a stroke? Would these be causing acute eye and face swelling symptoms?

I'm going to take her to the vet and because of her state, will sadly euthanize her. But for knowledge and curiosity, do symptoms like these align with hamster strokes or something else?

So sorry to hear about your hamster.
I think only a vet will be able to tell you what happened to your hamster. You made the right decision by letting her go to avoid suffering.

I am so sorry as well. Our Syrian hamster recently had to be pts with a similar thing although the eye problem and head swelling came on gradually. It is most likely a tumour but if it came in quickly it could be an abscess but it will be pressing on the brain and eye and painful and isn’t really resolvable as it could take 10 days for antibiotics to be effective, if it’s infection, during which time they are suffering. Also if infection gets in the blood stream then it’s too late.

Your little girl was a grand age and will be free from pain soon.
