Default Re: I think my hamster has some health issues? I want to confirm

I am back from the vet. He didn't know what those bugs were in English, but he gave my hamster an injection and some spray. Told me to clean EVERYTHING with it and wait for 8 hours and then wash everything with hot water very carefully, because otherwise my hamster will die (If I don't clean his things very carefully with hot water).
He took a look at his skin and the bugs are sucking his blood and then asked me if I have any photos.
He also told me to put all the wooden things to the oven, praised me for using paper bedding and if I must use wooden bedding then it has to go to the oven first.
Also asked me where I bought the hamster etc. I don't know what shot he exactly got but he said it will kill all the bugs on him.
He said my hamster is as well. Anyways, after cleaning the cage and all of his things I have to go back in 3 weeks.

His squeaking was very quiet but he hasn't squeaked any more.

The thing is I've only seen bugs in his cage and the bugs are only in his nest. Nowhere else, so the bugs aren't everywhere.

He said that the bugs might have come from the store and he probably already had bugs when I bought him or from bedding, hay, food. Anywhere.

I hope I'll manage to clean his cage very well. It's certain that someone had sucked his blood, because I saw his skin as well.

Edit: Cleaned everything as best as I could, but took the house from the playpen (No bugs in his playpen nor the house).
I hope he'll be fine.

Hamster seems to be doing fine.
I haven't noticed any bugs so far. He's using his wheel and everything.

It's not over yet. I have to go back in 2 weeks.
Also, he was just hissing in his sleep. I woke him up.

So your gut instincts were right - they were bugs on the hamster and sucking his blood - maybe some kind of ticks. I do hope this has solved the issue now. Don’t worry if it sets taming back a bit - he may just need some time. He will not have liked all the palaver of going to the vets - and another cage clean - so may be best to leave him alone for a few days till he gets back into a routine. They never like being woken up anyway and it can be instinctive to bite or hiss if they dont know what’s going on and have just woken up.

But he was hissing while sleeping and that's when I woke him up? So when he squeaks or hisses in his sleep I shouldn't wake him up?
He didn't hiss at me. He woke up and had his classical sleepy eyes and I talked to him and petted him and gave him a worm and he went back to sleep.

I've played with him daily too and whenever I open the cage door he tries to come out of the cage.
(Before he never did, but now he's pretty much climbing out of the cage when he I open the door).
Today he stepped on his water bowl and I've heard that hamsters can't get wet. I hope he's fine.

I'll have to go back to the vet in two weeks and he told me not to clean the cage. I haven't seen bugs yet.

It is also possible that the previous person who lived here had pets and that's why there are bugs now? It doesn't make sense, but that's what one of my friend said.
The vet asked me if I have any other pets though or if I had any other pets before him too.

I hope he's fine. Hamsters don't live very long and I don't want him to spend his life in stress. I want him to feel loved and happy. So far it's been difficult.

You did the right thing by taking him to the vets and it does sound like he’s getting better!

I’m no expert but I recently started a thread named “nightmares?!” My previous hamster would sometimes screech in her sleep and after her sudden death I was worried maybe it had been a sign of illness. So I worried now my new hamster started doing the same.

Much like us though maybe he was just having a nightmare. Especially with the stress of vets recently, I just normally check on them after hearing them and just make sure they’re okay.

Don’t beat yourself up over things, the medication should help at least somewhat and you are right that hamsters don’t have long lasting lives but it’s about what you’ve done for them in that time. You care and love him, he’s gotten bugs and you took him to the vets, hopefully he will continue to progress and get better which I do believe he will with the medication to help. Just don’t be so hard on yourself you’re doing great!

What Lila said . It has been an anxious time for you but it’s getting sorted. You sound to be doing great with your hammy - he likes coming out. Yes sounds like bad dreams- he’ll get over it. They’re like children - the bad bits will be forgotten once he’s having fun again. It’s surprising how a special treat can get them so excited they forget everything as well. Half a walnut does it with mine. Or a whimzee toothbrush chew with sunflower seeds in. He has been treated and hopefully they won’t come back now. Sounds to me like it’s more likely he got them at the pet store.

I don't know if it's too early to cheer, but I haven't seen a single bug. The vet told me to visit him again. Do I still need to go back if there won't be any bugs?
He didn't say: "Come back if you see any bugs again". He said: "Come back in 3 weeks".
One thing that I did was that I took his house from the playpen, because no matter how hard I tried the poisonous smell didn't disappear from his plastic house. I washed his stuff many times and I sniffed it and everything, but in his plastic house I could still feel the poisonous smell, so I didn't put it back.
I also didn't spray poison on water bowl, food dish, but yeah, there are no bugs anymore. I think in the past the bugs reappeared within days.

That’s amazing news! I’m really happy for you and your hamster. I think it’s a good idea to remove the home on this occasion as maybe the smell also reminds him of what happened.

If the vet said come back in three weeks, they normally say to make sure the animal has no long term issues from an event, so if the bugs were sucking his blood they may just want to check his skin, fur any soreness and weight just to make sure he’s recovering. If you’ve got your vets phone number though they normally write on the system their reasons so you can always ask them to double check.

Super happy, fingers crossed those pesky bugs don’t return! 🤞🐹
