Default Dwarf without thyroid gland

Does anyone know how the removal of the thyroid gland would affect a hamster?
I can't find any information relating to hamsters.

Dwarf hybrid Clarissa had a large mass on her upper body removed. Unfortunately it was attached to the thyroid gland which was removed as well.
There's a small mass on the other side which was left in place because of the risk of unintentionally removing the parathyroid gland.

At this point i'm not even sure if Clarissa will recover from the trauma of the surgery, physically and mentally but i'd like to find out how best to care for her should she get through this.

I saw a different vet for the follow up appt who was only able to offer statistics on cats regarding life after a thyroid removal and didn't suggest any medication. I think she was more of a cats and dogs vet and her job was to check the wound and stitches.

I just wondered if anybody on here has or had a hamster who had their thyroid removed and how it affected their life.

I need to get in contact with Clarissa's regular vet who knows about hamsters to sort the medical side of it.

Yes, that's true. I received a detailed, personalized post op care sheet with medication listed, 0.1ml metacam (cat one) for five days.

Do you know if the whole thyroid was removed or just part of it? I’m going on human thyroidectomy effects, but if part of the thyroid is still there then that just takes over in producing the thyroid hormones. If the whole thyroid was removed and no hormone treatment that would lead to hypothyroidism which would basically mean (in a human) slower and more lethargic (possibly). The effects may be different in a hamster (they have a very fast metabolism).

I hope your vet can help and that Clarissa improves soon - it’s still early days x
