Swollen penis

Hello, my hamster’s penis look so swollen, it doesn’t look like a normal hamster penis and it looks like a small balloon. Can you help me, there is no veterinary for small animals on our area.

A regular vet will have basic knowledge. It's hard to tell as photo stretched but it could be an infection needing antibiotics or a prolapse. A vet is needed

I was able to find a veterinarian and he told me that it can either be an infection or something. He gave me 2 medicine or antibiotics. If the medication won’t work, it might result to the removal of the infected area, hence, surgery.

Hope the antibiotics help. I can’t imagine them doing surgery to remove the penis! How would the hamster pee? It may be a case of pushing a prolapse back in and putting a stitch in. Hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick.

I hope so too, but everyday, his penis just keep on getting bigger and I’m scared

I am sorry to hear that. Do you have a photo? To give an idea of how swollen, colouring etc. Can you find another vet and ask for another opinion? Ideally an exotic vet - they know a lot more about hamsters. Some vets may do a video consultation if it is a distance and you say it is urgent. Or is there a small animal hospital that could help?

I think of surgery becomes necessary it needs someone experienced to weigh up how the hamster would manage and the best surgical options. If it is swelling quickly it could be a build up of fluid. How long has he been on the antibiotics? It’s important they get the full dose or infection can get worse. Is he taking it ok?

Does he seem in pain?

Off the top of my head it seems likely to be infection or an abscess that needs lancing. If it is infection or an abscess the antibiotics should start to help within a few days.

This thread may help. Although in this case it wasn’t actually his penis. Is your hamster still peeing? Are you sure the vet said surgery would be to “remove “ the penis or just surgery to the area?
