Do you mean the baytril? It's tricky if you're away as well. Most foods don't disguise the nasty taste - I've used a certain kind of dog food recommended (probably too difficult to obtain now). Some people use runny honey drawn up into the syringe with the baytril - that would be easier! If they will then accept syringe feeding. So maybe you could get some runny honey quite easily. As he's so poorly and syringe feeding may be difficult (and risky if it goes in his lungs) maybe try just putting a pea sized amount of the honey on a very small dish of some kind - or a jar lid. And add the baytril to it and mix it up. For that maybe slightly less runny honey!

Have a search in the forum as it is a common issue. Wet foods are best but not a huge amount. Jam, malt paste, banana, baby food. porridge, bread..depends what he usually eats too

Mashed banana might be easier yes. Main thing is he gets the fully dose daily so just a tiny amount of food that will all get eaten. If he's so unwell he's not really interested in food you may need to just syringe it in, in which case runny honey will do and the medicine less likely to get spat out again. But make sure his head isn't back so it can't go in his lungs - put the syringe in from the side of his mouth.

Just a really tiny pea sized amount so he eats all of it. Maybe on a teaspoon? Drop the baytril on it and mix it in a bit so it's not sat on top. Some hamsters will go with that - others will shun it if they smell or taste the baytril!

I used this after having it recommended but won't be easy to get hold of if you're gouing away. It really did disguise the taste though - meaty.

Yeah I was only going to use a tiny bit, otherwise he'll just put it in his cheeks and then he won't get the medicine. If I struggle to get the medicine into him, I'll definitely look into getting that dog food - thanks for the suggestion

Probably easier to get hold of runny honey Then if you do have to give it in a syringe he may just lick it up if the honey is mixed with it in the syringe. I think you draw up the Baytril first, then a tiny bit of honey. Check the dosage as well. People can often get confused about that and the syringe markings. They should give you a 1ml syringe which has 10 big markings on and 10 little markings for each of the big markings. So 1 (10 little markings) is 0.1ml 2 is 0.2ml and so on. But the little markings are 0.01. 0.02.

I would think the dose would be about 0.2 or 0.3 but depends on the weight of the hamster. The vet will have worked it out and put the dose on the box. Is the other med metacam? (AKA Loxicom). That's for pain relief and an anti inflammatory.

banana worked for a little while, but cause he's ill and not eating much and I have a lot of medicine to give him I couldn't use that method for all of it. I ended up having to hold him and directly syringe it into his mouth, but I feel I may've held him a bit too hard in my desperation to stop him from running away as his eyes seemed to pop a tiny bit. I think I'm gonna have to resort to swaddling/holding him so i'll actually get the medicine into him. Does anyone have any tips on how to swaddle him? I tried that before just holding him but he kept escaping before I could actually swaddle him

As you will be giving the meds for a while its important to try make it as calm as possible as anything stressful they soon remember and that in turn makes it harder. He also has a severe resp infection here so you need to be super careful compressing airway or raising heartbeat. Id try a few more foods 1st if you can

what dose as you should be able to manage to get it in a small blob

Yeah I was gonna try some more foods, but I couldn't do that yesterday as it was late and I just didn't have time.

the dose is 0.3 ml total (0.1 ml of baytril and 0.2 ml of metacam)
