Are his eyes normal?
Someone just asked me what's wrong with my new foster hamster's eye.
The "white" that's not white of his eyes can be seen in both eyes in the corner.
I hadn't noticed this as abnormal when i checked him over and thought that some hamsters have eyes like that but now i'm not sure of course.
Does anybody know?
I thought i'd ask before i book a vet appointment because his eyes are clear and he appears to be able to see alright.

Re: Are his eyes normal?
I will be interested to hear what others on the forum have to say as one of our previous hams had something very similar. Our vet examined him carefully and concluded that everything was ok and there was nothing that needed to be done. We therefore left it and it never seemed to bother Bojos at all x

Re: Are his eyes normal?
Thank you for your reply Charlie. My foster ham isn't bothered by it either.
I just realized that i worded my question stupidly because a hamster's eye isn't a pupil with white around it like a human's.

Re: Are his eyes normal?
No, both eyes are like that and you only notice it when they are wide open. There's no injury, discharge, redness or anything like that.
To be honest, i didn't notice it until someone pointed it out to me. If he was my own hamster, i wouldn't worry because i think its just the way his face turned out but he's going to go up for adoption.

I don't think so because the eyes are clear and he can see alright.

Re: Are his eyes normal?
I’ve done a bit of searching and found that there’s a condition in guinea pigs called fatty eye or pea eye which looks the same. It’s the result of the conjunctival tissue around the eye being swollen or enlarged. It seems to be a common hereditary condition in guinea pigs but could be cause by an infection, teeth problems etc. I also saw a forum post saying that it’s becoming increasingly common in dwarf hamsters.
I would guess that if the eyes have always been like that it’s hereditary and nothing to worry about, but I’d certainly contact a vet if it developed suddenly.

Re: Are his eyes normal?
Not really sure what you are meaning from the photo but from description I did think what Shame just mentioned. Rats can also get it, and in dogs too.
Usually congenital and harmless

Re: Are his eyes normal?
I meant what Shane described but worded it awkwardly.
Thank you Shane for doing the research.
This was extremely helpful and put my mind to rest.
I'm pretty sure that Bruno has fatty eye, in fact the whole dwarf looks overweight but living in a tiny cage without a wheel can do that.
