Question Concerns Over Recently Adopted Hamster

Hi,

Kindly see attached a picture of Ali G, 4-5 mo male syrian who I adopted approximately 2 weeks ago.

He seemed perfectly alert after I brought him home.

However, over the last week he has been suffering from sticky eyes, which I haven't been able to clear up with damp cotton, lethargy and excessive urination.

I have also noticed his ears have been laying flat and wanted to come here to seek advice.

I wondered if the heat here in the UK of late could have had an ill effect on him. He is kept out of direct sunlight but the room still gets hot.

Many thanks

The heat bothered our hamsters too but shouldn't make a hamster ill when kept in a well ventilated habitat.

I wonder if he has a UTI since you mention excessive urination or has he been drinking more because of the heat?

I would definately get him checked out by an exotics or hamster knowledgeable vet which in my opinion is always the best and only course of action when there are concerns about a hamster's health. They can go downhill very quickly.

Hello, Mr Ali G certainly looks unwell poor man. Ears back and all the other things you describe are big warning signs so he needs to be seen by a vet asap. The sticky eyes can happen when they sleep too much but his age I wouldn't expect that. Ears back that don't perk up after wakening are a big tell tale sign.

Keep us updated and sendign well wishes to you both

Hi both,

I read these comments and had planned to call PDSA vets first thing Monday morning. I spent the night at my boyfriends and just came home to find poor Ali G had already gone. He went down hill so quickly and I was quite shocked as he was so young. I feel frustrated that I can’t pinpoint what exactly happened. All my hamsters have died of old age so am upset by his sudden passing. Thank you all for your advice, I only wish I had had enough time to get him an appointment! He will be buried in a beautiful spot in the woods.

I'm terribly sorry to hear this sad news.

Hamster ears being down is usually a sign they aren't feeling great but as prey animals they hide pain well so often when they are showing signs things may already have progressed

Play well Ali x
