Default Hot Hamster!

Hi

Little Ralph is having trouble in this heat - his bits and bobs are quite protruding which I have heard is due to heat too - does anyone have any tips to keep t hem cool?

I have a tiny hand held fan which I put near the cage but he just shudders and doesnt seem to like it (its not directly on him of course) and now he tries to sleep in his tubes but becuase they are plastic its probably just as hot!

I have put his sand bath in to the cage as its nice and cooling for him to burrow but he doesnt seem keen and I have a cool mat that you can freeze and I let it defrost slightly and place it on the cage - I dont know if I am doing the right thing or not - any tips would be gratefully received thank you!!

Get two ceramic hides or mugs and always keep one in the fridge and the other, cool one in his cage then alternate between them.

Some of ours have moved out of their houses to sleep in a ceramic or coconut hide.

I deal with the heat the continental way and keep blinds closed and curtains 3/4 drawn to keep the heat out.

Sometimes I put a frozen cool pack on the tank lid or top of the cage, so they can't reach it but it creates a cool area underneath.

Fans don't do much for hamsters because they work by making sweat evaporate faster, but hamsters don't sweat. So it just feels like lots of air blowing around to them.

That's interesting and explains why Rodney climbed on a table and meerkated towards the ceiling fan sniffing like mad. So it wasn't to cool himself down but to investigate where the blowy air came from. He then looked at me and blinked with one eye which always cracks me up.

Ralph may like a bit of cucumber or watermelon in this weather as a snack. I find that ours don't eat as much when its hot but then again, i'd rather have a salad than a sandwich or an icecream, preferably.

thank you Ria I have some cucumber in the fridge he has had it before and ive usually left it out of the fridge for like 20 minutes (in cooler weather) and thoroughly washed it, so I might try it a bit cooler for him - he loves cucumber and he adores courgette, the only being in our house (we like courgette but dont love it) that loves it!! Bless Rodney thats so cute, exactly we humans dont eat so much in the heat of the day either thanks again

I managed to sort out a profile pic so this is our little darling, runs the house he does! If he wants attention boy does he let you know it !!

I was going to ask you if that's Ralph.
He is so so cute! He looks like he's got his humans wrapped round his little paws.
Looking forward to see and hear more of Ralph.
