Default Helping a respiratory illness

Hi everyone,

So I’ve been to the vet today and found out one of my babies has a respiratory illness, I’m absolutely beside myself. I’ve got antibiotics and she’s taking them alright after a bit of a tantrum. The vet told me to be prepared for them to potentially not work so I’m just waiting out the next couple of weeks and trying to make her more comfortable.

Is there anything I can do to help her, either her recovery or just general comfort? Like vaporub in water in the room or something?

Sorry to anyone seeing this twice. Accidentally put it in hamster chat and then put it in healthcare thinking I could delete the other but I don’t think I can

Hello. I am replying to the one on the healthcare section as it seems more appropriate . Maybe one of the mods will come along and remove the duplicate post.

So sorry to hear your hammy has a respiratory infection. How old is she? Antibiotics are the way to go so fingers crossed. Is it baytril? They hate the taste of that. Some people suck up runny honey in the syringe with the baytril to make it more palatable. It’s quite important they get the full dose each day and finish the course.

Other causes, other than a bacterial infection, could be allergy or a viral infection. Has anything changed in her environment recently? Change of bedding eg. If it’s viral it should clear up on its own. Hamsters can actually catch colds from humans.

Thanks Serendipity, I was looking for something like healthcare or illness and didn’t see it until after I originally posted, silly me.

It is baytrill, I think she’s got a cold or something from me because she’s the one who gets handled, her sister never took to being held. Tbh, I’m quite glad she doesn’t like the taste because it’s making her drink water which she wasn’t really doing before, plus I bribe her with peanut butter afterwards. I’d hazard a guess she’s about 19-20 months, assuming 2 months when I got her.

Do you reckon anything would clear her breathing to make her more comfortable? I’ve seen thyme tea and vaporub in hot water near the cafe suggested, but not on here where the real experts are.

Vaporub would be a horrible idea if I'm honest as it contains ingredients that are a) very strong & irritating(they could cause more issues than they'd fix essentially) and b) unsafe for hamsters - in particular eucalyptus from what I remember, but I'm fairly certain it contains multiple ingredients that are considered unsafe.

The absolute best thing you can do is stick with the medication and keep the environment in general free from respiratory irritants(dust, harsh ingredients in many products, etc).
