Default Small circle like cuts on front paws?

I've been examining my hamster once every week as I'm quite a protective mum of my furbabies.

However, over the last month, I noticed there was a scab like circle on top of his front paw. I assumed he just caught himself as it was just after he escaped and the scab would fall off.

Although, I noticed another one appeared the same kind of location and shape on the other paw and there were like two of them.

Not sure what this is but I'm wondering if he's catching it or nibbling his paws when he's grooming or has an itch? I have a photo here, you may not be able to see it well but will share it anyway.

With the first scab, it did fall off and I was like "Oh your tootsies are better" but went to recheck again and it had reappeared. But that's now disappeared once again and looks all normal.

OOh that does look sore - like an infected injury. Strange it's on the top of both paws. Assume there is nothing in his cage that could be sharp - it can be worth checking wood items like bendy bridges and houses. Some houses even have nails in which get revealed if the wood is chewed.

The only other thing I can think, with it being on the top of his paws, is if he has been hanging from the roof mesh or trying to pull himself up, and cut the top of his paw with the pressure of the mesh.

I've just checked him over and they appear to be gone, but if they pop back up then I will be concerned.

As with wooden items, I do check them over every three days to make sure there's no splintering wood and bits that shouldn't be there (like nails as you stated).

I can't find anything! The mesh is out of reach from him, there's no way he could climb up the plastic!

There may be one concern, recently with purchasing wood chippings I have been finding large chunks of wood (like a pebble size) and I've tried my best to constantly sort through it to ensure I don't miss anything but you always end up finding a few other large pieces of wood.

On the infected side of things; it didn't look infected, just like your usual scabbed over cut. I made sure to check close for infection since I'm a graduated animal management student that had to cover illnesses/diseases and issues like infections etc. so it looked fine there.

Bizarre!

It could be the wood chips I guess - if he's been digging in them. If it's the tops of his paws he could have been trying to squeeze under something?

Was this before or after his new wheel? The new wheel is quite safe (although they do need checking for splinters so having sandpaper around is handy - but if plastikoted there shouldn't really be any splinters.

Some wheels (possibly the old one) do have hazards where paws can get trapped - stands, grooves, fasteners etc.

It was before the new wheel. So I'm actually at an entire lost of how he got it! Guess if it shows up again; as stated, will then be very worried and a big mystery to how he's hurting his toots.

Could have been on the old wheel then. Some wheels really do have health hazards and places to get trapped - especially when hamsters do unpredictable things. Glad it’s cleared up.
