Exclamation Hamster escaped last night

Hello, my hamster got out last night after I opened her bin cage a tiny bit to cool her down. I woke to her on the floor and quickly scooped her up and put her back in. However, I noticed her emptying her pouches and they were full of the leaves on my monstera deliciosa. I have no idea whether this is poisonous to her but it doesn’t look like she ate any and if she did, it was only a tiny bit. I guess that this was a few hour ago but she is still acting like her normal self, eating and storing food. I have removed all of the leaves from her nest and my mum will call the vets whilst I am at school to check if everything’s ok. Does anyone have any advice or any signs to look for to see if she has been poisoned? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I don't know about that plant and being poisonous but glad she is fine.

That plant cause cause irritation and swelling of the mouth and throat but that tends to deter animals from eating much of it. If she's fine now it should be ok. It's a fairly immediate effect rather than something that takes hours to develop.

How comes you opened her bin in the first place though? I get the idea with cooling her down but doesn't her bin cage have a DIY mesh top which circulates and lets air in and out?

Hello, she does have loads of holes drilled in the top and can breath perfectly, it was more of a precaution than really necessary because my room has never been so hot before and I was worried about her overheating. I know now not to open it in the future though and will move her to a cooler room next time x

Unfortunately holes do not provide adequate ventilation. You really do need a safe properly spaced mesh right away.

You need more than a few holes I'm afraid. Ammonia (from urine) is heavier than air so it sinks to the bottom of the cage. So whilst having holes in the top, it may make it harder for the ammonia to escape.

Ria P has some lovely bin cages. I'm sure she could show you some for ideas. I don't know if she's done a tutorial type thing though.

Oh I had no idea, thank you for telling me, I’ll get straight on it, is there a certain type of glue to use or do you tie the mesh on? I only got her bin cage a few weeks ago because her other cage broke x
