Blood in cage
Hi,
I have a 1.5 year old female Syrian hamster called Ruby. When she woke up this evening I opened her cage to say hello and noticed a small amount of blood on one of her gnawing toys (see photo). I have examined her and can't see any wound, and she is behaving normally and doesn't mind being handled. She doesn't appear to have a sore mouth either.
What should I do? Is it best just to keep an eye on her or should I think about taking her to the vet?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Blood in cage
Hi and welcome to HC!
Did you find anymore traces of blood or was it a one off?
Sorry for the late reply. I read your post but didn't know how to respond. Like you, i would have been unsure what to do since it was only a very small amount of blood but must have come from somewhere.
Did you check her teeth to see if they're ok?

Re: Blood in cage
I think it’s best to take her to the vet as female hamsters can get pyometra (womb infection) and any sign of blood needs looking into quickly in case it is that - especially at her age. If there is no sign of injury. It’s best to go to an exotic vet - they know a lot more about hamsters and the types of pyometra (one type can be treated with antibiotics). Google should find one in your area. The cost tends to be the same.
