Default Old hamster urinating in his nest

I have a Syrian who is a ripe old 2y 5m old. He has always been very clean and has a two chamber wood house. This week he seems to have stopped using his sand toilet, and is just urinating in his nest. It was pretty gross when I checked it today, so i cleaned it out and gave him fresh bedding in there.

Is this normal for old age? Is there something I can do to make his sleep area more comfortable? I can't imagine sleeping in your own urine is any fun, but I can't keep it dry for him all day. His stored food is getting sodden too.

Can you tell if he is still eating and drinking ok? It seems unusual not to use his toilet unless he is struggling to get up and go there. How they are in their old age May vary but our first Syrian lived to 2 years 8 months and towards the end he still dragged himself out to use his toilet even when he didn’t get up to eat and drink. If you haven’t already, I would move his food bowl and water bottle as close to his house as possible so he can reach them easily.

However if he is still quite active and reaching his food and water easily, then maybe he has just become a bit incontinent. It is difficult when their nest is pee’d in as no they can’t keep sleeping in pee but it also stresses them having the nest and hoard removed. Maybe you could just do his nest every other day. And replace his hoard with new food but put it slightly to the side of his nest so it doesn’t get peed on. I’ve had to do that before abd after a few times of doing this they can adopt that new place as the hoard area. He is a grand age. Organs start failing gradually in their old age (and maybe bladder control too).

I think that like humans, hamsters can also become incontinent in old age. Our Syrian did and i cleaned his nest daily. Like yours he was a very clean hamster so couldn't help it and it was really sad to see.

This happened with my little Star (girl syrian) towards the end, I just used to give her dry bedding everyday, so she wasn't sat in the wet. She was still eating and drinking at the time.

Thanks for the replies. He's still active and eating, and even climbing up some shelves to ask for out of cage time, so he's doing okay in that sense. I think a daily nest clean sounds like it is the best option. Interestingly, he hasn't seemed to pee on me when he is out of his cage, but maybe he just hasn't been out long enough for this to become clear.

I wonder if an en suite toilet would help?

My Syrian Rory is a lazy hamster who will not leave his guinea pig sized house during the day. I've installed a small sized Rodipet ceramic corner toilet opposite his nest. He pees in there so at least his nest stays dry.
