Default Found my hamster in our trash bag

i have a pretty large cage for him(idk exactly how big is it in inches but it takes half of my 20*20meters room)after i put down some new toys for him he somehow managed to climb it up last night, i found the problem and fixed it, but the actual problem is, i found him in a trash bag, trash bag was really smelly tho nothing toxic in it,he had been filling up his cheeks with it i assume because his cheeks were full and he was despratly finding a way out, as soon as i opened the trash bag he jumped into my hands, after that he drank water like normal, i gave him some traits/food and he's asleep now, but i wonder if he is okay? do they get sick by bad smell? could he have eaten something in the trash bag that causes him to get sick? what should i do what are your suggestions, sry for my bad eng, thanks for reading.

I think you'll just need to keep an eye on him and see if he is ok in case he's eaten something undesirable. The smell isn't likely to affect him. You could check his hoard as well as he may have depouched some things from the trash bag - and remove anything unsuitable.

How did he get out? Does the cage have a top on it? Hamsters are great escape artists and will get out of anything that isn't securely closed with a top/lid. They can scale their wheel or push all the substrate into one corner and climb up it and just walk out!

So check the cage for security. If there's no lid/roof then it needs one. If he pushed it open then it needs fastening down somehow. Do you have a photo of the cage?

hi,thank you for the answer, he is all fine & good now, yeah that day it seems like i didn't close one of his cage doors and that caused it, he hasn't escaped since then so i think that was the problem, his fur was a bit smelly but after he took a sand bath for several days its fine now, thanks for your reply again.sry for my late answer
