Sorry, it was the first picture I’ve ever tried to attach and it kept saying the length was too long. I’m rubbish!

It’s difficult resizing photos on a phone. I find the easiest way is using paint on windows 10. You just click resize, select pixels (as opposed to percentages) and change the top number to 650 (width). The length changes automatically. If it’s a portrait size photo like from a phone I’d put 500 instead of 650. Then “save as” JPEG. And it will be a good size on the forum page when uploaded.

Sorry, I’ve only just seen your message as I didn’t see we can gone onto a different page. Thank you for the photo size help as I was pulling my hair out.

I’ve got some antibiotics from the vet until Winnie has her check up tomorrow. I asked the receptionist if I could give her the metacam and baytril at the same time but she said it’s best to wait half an hour between. Would you usually do that? At the moment I’m putting the syringe straight into her mouth so I know she’s taken it but she’s never liked being handled so I feel terrible having to do it once in the morning and then possibly twice at night. I wish she could understand when I tell her I’m sorry and I’m just trying to help.

I think I gave them at separate times but that was mainly because I gave them in food. The metacam is easy to put on a pea sized amount of baby food or porridge eg (on a separate little dish). They like the taste of that and will eat it up. I tend to make a hollow in the middle of the soft food with my finger and drop the metacam into the hollow so it gets licked up with the food and doesn't run over the edges and get missed.

Baytril tastes really nasty and it's difficult to disguise the taste with food. Some people suck a bit of runney honey into the syringe after drawing up the baytril and the hamster will sometimes want to lick the mix out of the syringe as it tastes nice.

I had both meds for a robo and there was no way I could syringe feed him - he was hard to catch and far too stressed by it. I had a tip to mix the baytril into Country Hunter beef dog food (small pouches). The beefy taste disguised the baytril. It worked really well - he went bonkers for the meaty dog food and used to push the plate around after for more.

So because I put it in food and they will only eat very small amounts, he had the baytril/meaty food mid afternoon (usually eaten by tea time). And the metacam in baby food at night time (gone by next morning).

I used the baby food lids as little dishes for the tiny amount of food with meds in.

With the baytril though it's really important they get the full dose regularly or any infection could get worse. So it needs to be something they will eat and eat all of it (hence tiny amount).

Thank you so much again for all your help.

I have put the metacam in some baby food to try that over night. She doesn’t get up during the day so I’ve been waking her up in the morning and waiting until she gets up at night.

I do have another question sorry which is probably really simple but it’s really stressing me out. How the hell do you manage to get 0.01ml in the syringe? And how do you get it to come out as it just sticks in the end even with a bit of water in it?

It is fiddly. Is that the baytril or metacam? The Metacam comes with a syringe that is too big - they should give you a 1ml syringe as well which is a thin syringe with 10 big markings. Each of those is 0.1 ml. Each of those has 10 smaller markings which are 0.01 ml. It is a very tiny amount.

You use the big syringe to draw up a fair bit of Metacam. The 1ml syringe fits into the bigger syringe abd you then draw 0.01 into the smaller syringe from the less small one. You need good eyesight. I tend to draw up more than needed in the small syringe abd tap it to get rid of any bubbles. Then squirt it in and out of the bigger one a few times if there is any air space or bubbles. Until it is just the medicine up to the 0.01 mark (which is the first tiny mark on the smaller 1ml syringe.

Hope that helps! It is about 1 drop from the bottle but better to measure it in the syringe because 1 drop can vary in size!

Both medicines have come in tiny bottles that have been measured by the vets so I only have the tiny syringe.

I have seen an exotic vet tonight and she doesn’t think it’s pyo as there is just blood and no discharge and it’s hard to say with out doing a scan of operating which I wouldn’t want to put her through. So I’m going to try the antibiotics and pain meds for a week.

That sounds like a sensible way forwards - I hope things improve. Is she ok in herself?

Vectis, an experienced breeder on here, has some very helpful info about giving meds, and it shows the difference on the syringe between 0.2 ml and 0.02 ml
