Default Re: Melanoma on 21 month old Syrian - Surgery? Yes or No?

I am so sorry - poor little guy. Good that your vet could do a biopsy. I hope it doesn't spread too quickly but you'll know by his condition. They are such difficult decisions. I think when they say aggressive it means fast spreading - most melanomas are. So your concerns about putting him through surgery without knowing if there were secondaries was a good gut feeling. There are very likely to be secondaries with an aggressive melanoma. So it's just a case of letting him live out his life comfortably. You will know if he's starting to suffer but I hope he goes on hamstering well for some time x

Our Syrian had his op and lump removed. It was all very nerve wracking - his wound has healed perfectly. They put a kind of invisible spray stuff over it after surgery which protects it from infection. He went a bit stir crazy in the hospital cage for a week but is now back to his old self. I don't have the results of the biopsy yet - should be any day. A bit different as it wasn't a melanoma.

But for future reference, with a good exotic vet, post op things aren't really a worry Although I did worry of course! His wound was really quite big! Long. But within 5 days it had virtually all healed up and hardly showed - amazing. He was active and hanging from the roof bars the night after surgery so bounced back straight away from the anaesthetic.

Every situation is different and your vet's biopsy has helped with decisions. Do keep us updated as to how he does.
