Hamster in torpor?
hi, so today i noticed my hamster was partially buried under his bedding, not moving and very cold, hes not dead, however, as hes still breathing/moving his nose, and occasionally walking
i held him under my shirt for about an hour and gave him warm milk and he responded to both, his breathing becoming less slowed and more even and he swallowed the milk just fine.
his body is a little warmer now, however, its still cold and limp.
my question is, how long do i need to hold him for? right now, i put him back in a freshly cleaned cage with extra food and clean water, ive held him for about 2 hours now and i only put him back because he began breathing better
does anyone have any advice for getting a hamster our of torpor?

Re: Hamster in torpor?
Do you have a heating pad? It needs to be around 30c to 34c.
Place the hamster on the heating pad for a while either supervised (to make sure he stays on there) or in a "isolated box" where the bottom is covered entirely by the heating pad. This helps fetch a hamster up to normal temperature and to bring them back out of Torpor.
If you don't have a heating pad you can try another place that has a ledge and is warm, like a radiator, just make sure you put something between the hamster and the radiator to prevent burning and make sure it isn't too hot through the towel/cloth.
Hope this helps. x
Keep me updated!

Why are you so sure that he is in torpor? How cold was the room he's in?

Re: Hamster in torpor?
I think you need to keep warming him gently until he comes round. It may be something else as it hasn't been particularly cold recently (depending on where you live!). Torpor occurs when they are in very cold temperatures. It may be an idea to book a vet appointment and have him checked over.
How old is he? If he is a very old hamster he maybe in his twilight time and starting to fail. Either way keeping him warm and comfortable helps. Laying him in a blanket on top of a tepid hot water bottle can help too, so you don't have to hold him all the time.
If it is torpor then too much heat can be a shock to the system and kill them so gradual gentle warming helps. If he is just unwell then he will appreciate being warm and comfortable too. Water would be better than milk, or baby food on a teaspoon to lick. They don't tolerate milk well (digestive system not designed for it).
It does sound like he is semi unconscious. Let us know how old he is. He maybe dying.

Re: Hamster in torpor?
UPDATE: he passed this morning
i thought he was in torpor because he showed no signs of aging and i woke up shivering last night, so i figured the room was too cold.
he was two years old so i knew he was getting to be old. thank you all for your advice.
rest in peace, danny <3

Re: Hamster in torpor?
I'm sorry for your loss.
He was an old man at two years old so it could have been his time. He died peacefully with you near him which is always the best way to go. Play well at the bridge Danny.

Re: Hamster in torpor?
So sorry for your loss. Agree I think it was a natural old age time of passing. At two they are really quite old - the equivalent of an 80 year old human. RIP Danny - play well over the rainbow bridge.
