He is so cute! And hairy. He doesn't look that bad to me, but honestly I would suspect the cat litter! I wouldn't use that. Childrens play sand is fine but needs to be sterilised if not sterilised at the time of purchase. Cage looks great.

You can actually make a rodipet type labyrinth house out of cardboard. Tissue boxes etc cut up and joined together. Not very glamorous but does the trick.

Or a shoebox house. It doesn't have the rooms but is a good size and will have a lift off roof. You cut the base out of the shoe box and keep the lid as a lift off roof. And cut a hole for a door.

Carefresh, as mentioned by Luna, has been known to cause allergies - it is quite dusty and I suspect it may be the number of chemical processes it goes through to create "cellulose" bedding. Paper is better and goes through less chemical processes.
