Correct Baytril Dosage?
My dwarf hamster (70g) was prescribed Baytril Oral 2.5% (diluted with saline) for a possible urinary tract infection. I have been advised to give 0.1ml once daily for 7 days but my sister who is a vet nurse said it should be twice daily.
Have many of you have used this drug and if so, what dose were you advised to give?
I don't want to overdose or underdose!
Also, can you disguise it in baby food and if so, which one is safest for a dwarf hamster?
Thank you x

Re: Correct Baytril Dosage?
In my experience it can be given twice a day, to keep it in their system. In the past I have been advised to split the dosage I was prescribed in half and give 1 part it in the morning and 1 part at night, if that makes sense. I have also just given it once a day - it all depends on the cirumstances and what it is being prescribed for.
Because your hamster is a dwarf and the baytril has been diluted, I can't advise on the measurements you should be giving as I think it would depend on how it has been diluted.
Maybe if you have concerns you could speak to your vet again tomorrow?

Thank you.
I'm not sure on the dilution so maybe I should double check that with the vet.
My sister said the trouble when you don't see an exotic vet is that regular vets tend to underdose!
We are not sure if he has a UTI or not, I think the vet is just airing on the side of caution.

From my experience that is what most vets will do. It is quite hard to work out what is wrong with our little ones sometimes. Fingers crossed the medicine works. It can take longer than a weeks sometimes though, see how you get on.

Re: Correct Baytril Dosage?
I would recommend discussing further with the vet. Second opinions without discussing the first aren’t a good idea.
The formulary normal for baytril is 5-10mg/kg. The undiluted dosage for therapeutic treatment at 2.5% would be .01 ml per dose. Based on the prescribed dosage, the vet has diluted it by 10 parts at 5mg/Kg.
I AM NOT A VET, this is not medical advice. That being said, the vet is likely taking a conservative approach because Baytril can be tough on the kidneys.
