I have been an avid lurker for a long time but never posted before.
Our lovely Syrian hamster Oreo is 20 months old. Last Saturday when I got her out for a cuddle I noticed an awful smell. I checked around her bottom and found pus around her bits. I wiped it away but by the next morning it was back. After googling I found out it was likely pyometra. We took her to the vets who said she wouldn’t recommend surgery due to her age but gave antibiotics. We are now a week later and there is still pus. The strange thing is she is completely well in herself. She’s eating lots, running around her wheel at night and happy to come out her cage for a cuddle. She doesn’t seem unwell at all.
I just don’t know what to do. I know antibiotics aren’t going to cure her so do we stop them and allow nature to run its course? I do not want her to suffer at all so we also don’t know when is the right time to put her to sleep. She seems so normal at the moment so I don’t want her to go prematurely, but I also don’t want her to be in pain.
It’s so difficult. She’s such a sweetheart and we are gutted.
So sorry to hear about your Oreo. It may be that the antibiotics are keeping her well. If she is running around normally and you don't detect signs of pain (for instance, hunched over in her cage, or ears pressed back) then I would say it's fine to leave her be for now. However, we don't know Oreo, so please be guided by your vet.
Did the vet say if it was pyometra or not? I'm only asking because sometime it can be a UTI/infection and it can take a few weeks for the antibiotics to work.
