Default Scented Bedding

I know that scented bedding is considered a no no, and for obvious reasons, i.e. respiratory issues

However, I was wondering is anyone aware of any scientific research done on this?

I couldn't find any.

I don't know of any scientific research because that's not something i ever look into.

Maybe you could contact whoever produces scented bedding and ask them? I'd ask them if there is any scientific research to proof that scented bedding is not harmful to hamsters.

The whole concept of scenting bedding is crazy considering that hamsters have scent glands and scent their environment.
A typical case of producing an animal product but aimed at humans without consideration for the animal, to please the human nose. Like a hamster ball, produced for the convenience of humans who can't be bothered setting up a playpen and without consideration to the stress and danger it exposes the animal to.

I don't think it's something we really need scientific research to prove. We already know the answer and all a study would do is put more hamsters through unnecessary suffering.

I’m not aware of any scientific studies but I think it would be unlikely to be considered as a subject for scientific study really, are you looking for references to show people maybe?
I think it’s just one of those common sense things if you understand hamster behaviour & their need to scent mark their territory without having to compete with something smelly we put in the cage1
In addition to possible respiratory issues there may also be issues with constantly rubbing against things to scent mark & over grooming to spread their scent around.

Along with respiratory issues and scent marking, there's also a high chance of allergic reaction whether the scent is synthetic or not. Even natural additives for scent would be very irritating of course - many of which would be either unsafe or in the case of essential oils for example, even safe plant species, likely far too strong.

I can speak from personal experience on skin reactions to different things and it is very painful to say the least & not something you want to happen especially with hamsters.

Thanks for your responses everyone.
I'm just working on a video re unsafe bedding and this was the only category that I could not find any specific 'scientific research' on. Of course common sense wise we know it's bad, we can think that for a lot of things, but it doesn't stop some people needing scientific research/examples to back things up, even then some people will not accept it.

Also not to upset anyone and I hate to say it but hamsters are used in research everyday and it's not always for the good of the hamster.
