hamster making squeaky sound?
not sure whether this should go here or in behavior, but oh well
I let my boy out into the bathroom today as I normally do, and I noticed he was making a weird squeaky sound. he hasn't been making this sound before, although I've noticed him making a little bit of a sniffing noise yesterday. anyone know why he's making this noise? and what should I do? he's eating and drinking like normal, and is fine except from him making this noise. I also haven't cleaned his cage or changed his setup in at least a few weeks. thanks
here's a video of him making the noise (turn your sound up, it's quite quiet): noise - Album on Imgur

Re: hamster making squeaky sound?
Is he still making the noise, or was it a one off?
Did he get spooked?

I don't think he got spooked as he was making that noise for a while. I think he might have a respiratory infection because he's been squeaking like that for a bit, and was making a clicking sound which I've heard is a sign of respiratory illness. I'm gonna take him to the vet as soon as I can, hopefully by Friday as the vets in my area aren't open for as long as they normally would be due to lockdown :)

Ok, yes if he is doing it often and long term, best get him checked out asap.

Yeah he does it on and off, and it's better to be safe than sorry

will do. he's going to the vets on either Monday or Tuesday as I've been monitoring him and it doesn't seem to be getting any better

Re: hamster making squeaky sound?
update:
he stopped making squeaking noises soon after the last reply on this thread, so I didn't take him to the vets, and he was fine for a few weeks. however, today he's been pretty much non-stop sneezing and squeaking and he's clearly not doing great as his breathing is laboured as well, so he's going to the vet's tomorrow. hopefully he recoveries well and quickly, as I can never sleep when my pets are unwell/unhappy and I've got very important exams pretty much every day for the next 5 weeks :(

Re: hamster making squeaky sound?
Update -
I took him to the vets as I said in my last post, however the vet didn't find anything wrong with him so he wasn't prescribed anything, and the sneezing and squeaking cleared up after a few more days although his breathing was a bit louder than usual. He was fine for a couple of weeks but then he started squeaking and sneezing and generally seeming unwell so I took him to the vets again. This time the vet was unsure if he has an upper respiratory infection or not, but he's been prescribed 2 drops of baytril everyday for the next week which will hopefully sort out any infection he may have - he's only had 1 dose so far but he's already seeming better as he's squeaking and sneezing a lot less, and he's running on his wheel again which is a good sign :)
