Default Lump on rear quarter

Hi all, had Syrians for many years now but recently little Waffles has developed a lump on her rear quarter, she has no issues with me touching it so its not bothering her but im certain its getting slowly bigger and feels a bit squidgy rather than solid.

Anyway iv never had this with any of my previous 9 Syrians, im guessing a Vets visit is in order but what exactly can they do? I presume they dont do procedures on little hamsters?

On further reading on google im presuming its a skin abcsess and sounds like it needs draining before it pops. Have asked for a vets appointment asap. Anyone had a hamster go through this procedure? Is it straight forward?

No one any thoughts?

Booked into vets on Monday, can skin abscess be treated? Do they drain them? Do they do this whilst hamster awake?

Would rather have some knowledge before go to vets

At the moment you don't know for sure what it is but the vet will advise and prescribe the correct treatment.
I've never had a hamster with a lump so wouldn't want to speculate.
Best thing to do is ask the vet what exactly what's involved before they start any invasive treatment, should that be needed. Vets are happy to talk concerned pet owners through any procedure before they proceed with it.

With the lockdown you probably won't be able to go into the surgery so have to hand her over but the vet will consult you before they do anything and that's your chance to ask questions.

I always write down what i want to know and last time i took a hamster to a vet during a lockdown i took a blanket and was so glad i did because i had to wait outside for a bit and was able to keep my hamster in his transport box warm and draft free. I have a big transport box and put a house and plenty of substrate in to keep him comfy.

Thanks for the reply Ria, I just like to have a bit of knowledge behind me before hand as I dont really trust vets in regards to treating small animals.

Trip to the vet didnt start well, I handed her over and explained where lump was and that she wasnt very active, often just sitting about rather than exploring/climbing. He asked her age and when I said around 3/4 months he replied with "well they dont move about much at that age"

Iv had 11 Syrians now and they have all been extremely active at 1 year old never mind 3 months. Anyway they have prescribed anti biotics as presume it must be a skin abcsess. Got to put 0.2ml in her water for next 7 days and hopefully clears up.

I saw three different vets until i spoke to one i felt confident in so i know what you mean.
I had to administer the antibiotic via a syringe with a drop of Ribena to make sure my hamster got the full dose. He got used to it and was ok with it.
Didn't know that it can be put in water. I'd ask for a different vet next time if you're not confident with this one but if its an abcess she'll need the antibiotics anyway. Hopefuly it wil get smaller after a week.

Id have been more content using a syringe as id at least know she is getting her full dose. She obviously isnt going to drink 100ml a day which is what it says to put her 0.2ml in.

Do you think i should just syringe 0.2 ml into her mouth each day instead?

The label says

"1.50 x Baytril 2.5% Oral (100)
Give 0.2ml in 100ml of water, every day for 7 days"

Would syringing it into her mouth without water mean she is getting a far too strong dose?
