Syrian hamster sneezing
i have started noticing my hamster sneezing lately and at first i have changed his bedding from chipsi-classic to tissues or toilet paper. But the new bedding started to stink alot and it was hard for me to clean . So what i did is that i washed the chipsi bedding and kept it out to dry its scent has reduced and my hamster doesnt sneeze much but now i have noticed it came back .
im not sure why he is sneezing? is it cause i dont clean his bedding often?

Re: Syrian hamster sneezing
It could be an allergy to something in the cage or maybe to dust from the bedding, does he do it all the time or just when he’s burrowing or any other particular time?
Allergies can be hard to pinpoint sometimes but aren’t really all that common so it’s more likely to be either a dust issue or he could possibly have a cold, is his breathing ok?
How often do you clean? Spot cleaning pee should be done as often as needed to prevent any damp or smelly build up in the cage but the rest of the cage shouldn’t need cleaning often, a partial clean once a month or less.

He doesnt seem to sneeze at a particular time but his sneezing increased a bit and his breathing is fine. These days i have been too worked up i take some time to clean out his pee so im guessing that would be the issue or it could be his bedding. im not sure if i should take him to the vet for this

Re: Syrian hamster sneezing
If his breathing is ok he’s probably ok too, keep his pee area clean & see if that helps, what substrates do you have available where you are? It could be the chipsi that’s making him sneeze but it’s hard to be sure, can you not get a paper based substrate? Toilet tissue is ok as an extra for the nest but not as a main substrate.
If the sneezing doesn’t get better it might be worth phoning the vet & see what they say.

the pet shop i go to only has chipsi bedding and various types of it. i checked 4 to 5 other pet shops but they dont sell paper based. Although there is one that i need to check again cause my friend bought a paper based bedding there. its also hard convincing my parents for new bedding as they think this bedding has no issue.
